Box Score 2 Fort Myers, Fla. – For the second straight day, Clark University split a softball doubleheader, dropping the opener, 9-3 to Dominican University before erupting offensively to win the nightcap 11-4 over Wisconsin Lutheran on Sunday afternoon at CenturyLink Field #1.
The day's contests evens the Cougars record at 2-2 – equaling their win total from a season ago and the 11 runs they scored are the most since early in the 2014 season.
In the opener with the Stars, Clark actually took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) single that scored Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.).
Dominican tied the game up in the top of the third when Gabi Alfano crushed a solo homerun off of Clark starter Sami West (Gonic, N.H.).
Alfano was in the middle of the Stars' big inning, providing a two-run double to right center during their seven-run seventh inning.
The Cougars were able to tack on another run in the sixth when Kraytenberg doubled home Barksdale.
West took the loss (0-2), going four inning and allowing six runs, four of which were earned.
Clark found itself down 4-0 to start the nightcap before exploding for ten runs in the sixth in support of freshman hurler Taylor Erickson (Natick, Mass.), who made her first appearance in the circle and picked up the win.
The Cougars were behind 2-0 already when RBI doubles from Abby Mahsem and Libby Schellpfeffer made it 4-0 after the three innings.
Clark answered back in the fourth when Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) kickstarted her career day with an RBI single to left after Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) had doubled to center.
The Scarlet and White then sent 13 batters to the plate in the sixth that began with Barksdale's second walk of the game. She eventually scored on Mackey's single to right and then Mackey scored on a Kraytenberg single.
Now down just 4-3, the inning continued and the Cougars went ahead 6-4 on a wild pitch by Schellpfeffer, a Danielle Tesler (Stoughton, Mass.) RBI single and an unearned run.
The Clark bats were not done in the inning as Jocie Orangio (Maynard, Mass.) scored on a Kayleigh McHugh (Pepperell, Mass.) double to center.
After a Kendra Walker (Cumberland, R.I.) single to left loaded the bases, Wright drove in another run with an RBI groundout. That set the stage for Mackey, who blasted a three-run shot to left that capped the ten run inning.
With the exception of Barksdale who had the two aforementioned walks and a run scored, all of the Clark starters had at least one hit in their 16-hit attack.
Anjelica Gonzalez (Manchester, N.H.), Erikson and Wright all had two hits while both Kraytenberg and Mackey each had three, combining to go 6-for-9 from the plater with three runs scored and six RBI.
The Scarlet and White are back in action on Monday when they take on Northland College at 9:00 AM and Albion at 11:00 AM.
