Box Score 2 Naples, Fla. – On the trip's last day of competition, Clark University finally got that elusive sweep, behind a pair of stellar pitching efforts, besting Wilmington, 2-1 and then following that up with a 2-0 shutout of Eastern Nazarene to complete their 2016 Spring Break ten-game slate at 5-5.
The Cougars opened the day with a 2-1 triumph over the Quakers (3-3) behind a strong effort in the circle from Sami West (Gonic, N.H.), who went the distance scattering five hits while yielding one unearned run and striking out three.
Clark got on the board first against Wilmington in the second when Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) blasted her second homerun of the season to center field, giving the Scarlet and White a 1-0 edge.
The Cougars doubled their lead in the third when Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) singled and Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Kraytenberg then drove in Wright with a single of her own to left field, giving the Scarlet and White a 2-0 advantage.
As her offense was giving her the lead, West was busy retiring eight straight Quaker batters on her way to her first victory of the season.
Wilmington finally broke through in the sixth when they took advantage of two hits and an error to score an unearned run.
The Quakers threatened in the seventh, putting runners on first and second with one out. A sacrifice moved those runners to second and third but West was able to get a game-ending groundout.
Kraytenberg had two of the Cougars' seven hits and both of Clark's RBI.
In the nightcap, the Scarlet and White got another excellent pitching performance this one courtesy of Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.), who tossed a complete game two-hit shutout against the Lions.
Clark got on the scoreboard early, pushing across one in the second when Anjelica Gonzalez (Merrimack, N.H.) walked and then came around to score on a Danielle Tesler (Stoughton, Mass.) single to center.
Foley retired seven straight to open the game then followed that up by retiring seven of the next eight.
The Cougars added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Wright singled home Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.) who opened the inning with a walk.
In the end it was only fitting that Foley recorded the final out, getting a groundout back to her to end the game.
Barksdale had a pair of hits for the Cougars, who will have nine days off until they play again – their home opener on Friday, March 18 against Bridgewater State.
