Clark Tops Lions, 8-1

Worcester, Mass. – Host Clark University swept through doubles action with relative ease enroute to a convincing 8-1 win over Emerson College on Wednesday afternoon in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis action at the Corash Tennis Courts.

The win for the Scarlet and White snaps a three match losing streak, sending their overall record to 6-11 and they are now 1-2 in conference matches.

For the Lions, meanwhile, after opening the season with five straight wins under new head coach Dan Munsey, they have now lost four straight, including their first two conference matches.

Clark was ahead 3-0 after doubles on the strength of an 8-0 win from Andrey Samodaev (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Mateo Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) at No. 2 over Joshua Freund and Blake Greenwalt.

Then, Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Spencer Pinkney (Falmouth, Mass.) teamed up to take down Antonio Ramirez and Daniel Okin at No. 1, 8-2.

The Cougars completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 victory from Lenny Siegel (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Teodor Nicola-Antoniu (Bucharest, Romania) at No. 3, where they made quick work of Samir Beria and Matt Jepsky.

Emerson's lone win on the afternoon actually came at No. 1 single as Ramirez got by Samodaev, 6-2, 6-3. They almost had another victory in the day's longest matchup but after dropping the first set 2-6, Pinkney rallied to move past Okin in the final two, 7-6, 10-4 at No. 2.

Both Siegel and Jimmy Keogh (Worcester, Mass.) faced little resistance in posting 6-0, 6-0 wins over Greenwalt and Jepsky at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively, while Gomez knocked off Beria, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.

Clark is off until next Wednesday when they travel to Springfield for a meeting with the Pride, while Emerson looks to return to the win column on Saturday when they visit Babson.
