Box Score Worcester, Mass. - Babson College sniper Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.) scored a game-high six goals, including the game-winner with 40 seconds left in regulation, lifting the visiting Beavers to a dramatic 14-13 win over host Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.
The win for the surging Beavers is their sixth in a row and evens their slate at 7-7 but more importantly bumps their league record to 4-1. For the Cougars, meanwhile, the loss drops them to 9-4 overall and all three of their league losses have come by a single goal (2-3).
In what turned out to be an incredibly entertaining affair, Babson used a ten goal second half highlighted by a six-goal fourth period to hand Clark its first home loss of the season (6-1).
The Beavers wasted little time getting on the board in the opening moments of the contest as Taylor Segreti (North Potomac, Md.) found the back of the net just 21 seconds into the game.
Clark answered with goals from Ryan Moore (West Hartford, Conn.) and a man-up strike from Isaac Bass (Amherst, Mass.) to go ahead 2-1 midway through the period.
Babson would score the last two goals of the frame as Doten scored unassisted markers with 5:53 left and then again with 3:40 left, giving the visitors the edge again.
Moore got the Cougars all square less than three minutes into the second but Connor Flaherty (Honeoye, N.Y.) notched a goal of his own to send the lead back to the Green and White.
After both teams went nearly six minutes without a goal it was Clark who got on the board twice more before the half ended. First Moore found Jack Pierce (Westborough, Mass.) for the freshman's seventh tally of the year and then Moore connected with Bass with 47 seconds left before the half ended to give the Cougars a 5-4 halftime edge.
Babson opened the second half like they did in the first, scoring almost immediately. This time it was Connor Hinton (Florham Park, N.Y.) feeding Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) for his first of the afternoon, knotting the game at 5-5.
Clark responded by scoring three consecutive goals to take an 8-5 advantage. Will Mandracchia (Melrose, Mass.) kickstarted the run with an unassisted marker which was followed by goals 40 seconds apart from Lucas Petricone-Berg (Nyack, N.Y.) and Brandon King (Eastham, Mass.).
Down by three the Beavers scored the next two goals courtesy of a man-up strike from Brendan Duffy (Duxbury, Mass.) and an unassisted tally from Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.).
The Cougars pushed their lead back to three as the quarter ticked down on strikes from Bass and Holden but Doten closed the scoring for the period when he rifled a shot past Drew Riopelle-Tyrrell (Northville, Mich.) with 3:52 left.
That goal started a 5-1 stretch over the next nine plus minutes where the Beavers were in complete control. Clark scored the first one of the period on another tally from Bass but the Green and White went on to get markers from Samuel Mishkind (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Flaherty, plus two more from Doten. When the smoke cleared from the run the Beavers were ahead, 12-11 with less than ten minutes to play.
Clark moved back in front on the Mandracchia to Holden connection as that duo teamed up for Holden's second and third goals of the day, respectively, pushing the Scarlet and White ahead, 13-12 with 6:30 to play.
Fabel evened the score again, this time at 13-13 with 3:13 left to play eventually setting the stage for the Green and White's Doten to deposit the game-winning goal in the upper right hand corner with less than a minute to play.
The Beavers held a 45-37 edge in shots but the Cougars' Alex Turgeon (Holden, Mass.) went 16-for-30 at the faceoff spot against Hinton and Maloney, while scooping up a game-best 11 groundballs.
Riopelle-Tyrrell turned aside 13 shots for the hosts, while Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) stopped six.
In the end, Doten was the story, finishing with six goals and an assist and his second game-winning goal against the Cougars. Back in 2014 he scored the game-winning goal 2:13 into overtime in the Beavers' 7-6 win over Clark.
Bass finished with his fourth four-goal game of the year for the Cougars, while Holden turned in his second straight hat trick. Mandracchia dished out a game-best three assists, while Petricone-Berg added a goal and two helpers for the Scarlet and White.
Both teams are back in action on Wednesday with the Beavers hosting Emerson and Clark visiting league-leading Springfield. Faceoff for both games are 7:00 p.m.
