Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. – Sami West (Gonic, N.H.) tossed a complete game shutout in the nightcap and Rachel Kraytenberg (Londonderry, N.H.) reached the 100-hit plateau as host Clark University rallied for a split of a New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader with Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon at O'Brien Field.
With the split, the Cougars now sit at 9-17 overall and pick up their first league win of the year. Wheaton, meanwhile, sees their record go to 12-8 and 6-2 in conference contests.
Because of weather related postponements over the last week, both teams are back in action tomorrow with league matchups with the Lyons hosting Babson and the Cougars visiting Wellesley.
Game 1: Wheaton 6, Clark University 0
Emily Bouthillette (Lincoln, R.I.) crushed a grand slam in the top of the seventh to give the Lyons some much needed breathing room enroute to the shutout victory in the opener.
Each team had opportunities to score early on but both pitchers were able to escape any damage. Wheaton starter Allison Cox (Torrance, Calif.) worked out of trouble in the first after Alyssa Wright (Manchester, N.H.) and Jocie Orangio (Maynard, Mass.) led off the frame with base hits but she was able to strikeout both Anjelica Gonzalez (Merrimack, N.H.) and Kraytenberg and then got Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) to fly out to right to end the threat.
Cougar hurler Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.), meanwhile, worked out of some trouble of her own in the top of the third. With one out, Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I.) ripped a hard single up the middle and then worked her way to third on a groundout and a wild pitch, bringing up Caroline Fairbanks (Milford, Mass.). One of the league's most feared power hitters, Foley was able to get her to line out to Mackey in right to end the rally.
Cox found herself in trouble again in the bottom of the third when Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.) smacked a leadoff double to deep right center. A pair of groundouts to first only moved Barksdale to third and then she was able to get Gonzalez to pop up to Mary DeMoura (Boston, Mass.) at short to end the frame.
Wheaton finally broke through in the top of the fourth when they loaded the bases with two outs and then got back-to-back singles from Madeline Hatch (Acton, Mass.) and Hart – the second of which smacked Foley in the ankle – giving themselves a 2-0 lead.
Mackey got into scoring position in the fifth when she stroked a one-out double to left center but the Cougars couldn't bring her home.
The Lyons then got the big blow in the seventh when DeMoura, Fairbanks and Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, Ill.) all singled to center in front of Bouthillette, who smashed the bases loaded bomb to dead center field.
Cox picked up the win for Wheaton, improving to 6-2 on the year, while Foley pitched effectively, but takes the loss, falling to 4-5.
Welch had three hits, while Hatch, Hart, Fairbanks and Bouthillette all had two.
Game 2: Clark 4, Wheaton 0
West was strong in the circle for the Scarlet and White as they picked up their first conference win since a 5-0 victory over Emerson back on April 19, 2014.
Clark wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the nightcap when back-to-back walks along with a wild pitch put runners in scoring position. Kraytenberg then drove in her team-leading 27th run of the season with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Cougars added two more runs in the second when consecutive doubles from Kayleigh McHugh (Pepperrell, Mass.) and Gonzalez tacked on another run and after Gonzalez moved to third on a wild pitch, she scored on a Leah Bodin (Andover, Vt.) groundout.
Wheaton was able to threaten in both the third and the fifth when they loaded the bases against West, but both times she was able to escape unscathed. First, in the third inning with the bases full, she was able to get Hart to groundout to Gonzalez at third and then in the fifth she got Morgan Walsh (Norwell, Mass.) to ground out to Kraytenberg at first.
After a 1-2-3 sixth, Clark was added another run in the bottom of the frame. Kraytenberg led off with her 100th career hit – a single up the middle – and with two outs, pinch hitter Danielle Tesler (Stoughton, Mass.) brought Kraytenberg home with an infield single.
The Lyons were able to put two runners on in the top of the seventh, but West retired the final batter on a deep flyout to center to end the contest.
Jillian Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass.) started in the circle for Wheaton but only tossed the first inning before giving way to Danielle Cimino (Cumberland, Maine), who went the final five.
The Lyons actually outhit the Cougars in the second game, 7-5, but they left 12 runners on base.
Kraytenberg was the only Clark batter to collect two hits, while Fairbanks had two for Wheaton.
