Cougars Rally For Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Fort Myers, Fla. – After seeing New Jersey City University rally for a 3-2 win in the first game of the day, Clark University showed some resolve and toughed out a 4-1 win over Mount Mary to secure a doubleheader split for the second day in a row on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1 Information
Score:
New Jersey City University 3, Clark University 2
Records: New Jersey City University 1-0; Clark University 1-2
Location: CenturyLink Sports Complex #2, Fort Myers, Fla.

How It Happened:
Clark actually had two separate one run leads but the Scarlet and White couldn't hold off the Gothic Knights.

The Cougars struck first in the top of the first when Christina Kopacz (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) singled down the left field line and came around to score on a Taylor Erickson (Natick, Mass.) groundout.

A pair of second inning singles and a fielder's choice led to a run for NJCU, evening the score at 1-1.

Clark went right back in front when they got a Michelle Robidas (Chelmsford, Mass.) run scoring single in the third.

Gothic Knights reliever Christina Mezey came in and quieted the Cougar bats, tossing four innings of relief and yielding just two hits.

Down 2-1, NJCU and Mezey put them ahead for good when she stroked a two-out, two-run single to right for the 3-2 lead.

Once back in the circle, Mezey worked her way out of a no outs, runners on second and third situation in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win for the Gothic Knights.

Inside The Boxscore:
Robidas had two hits for Clark, while Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.) had a hit and a stolen base.

Game 2 Information
Score:
Clark University 4, Mount Mary 1
Records: Clark University 2-2; Mount Mary 0-1
Location: CenturyLink Sports Complex #2, Fort Myers, Fla.

How It Happened:
Freshman hurler Sarah Woods (Littleton, Mass.) won her first collegiate start, tossing four innings and allowing just four hits and one earned run.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Clark answered back with single runs in the second, third and fourth to take a 3-1 edge. In the second Kayleigh McHugh (Pepperell, Mass.) smacked an RBI single and then Jocie Orangio (Maynard, Mass.) took advantage of a Mount Mary miscue to push Leah Bodin (Andover, Mass.) across the plate.

Clark's third run came home when another Mount mishap helped Barksdale bring home Erickson (Natick, Mass.), giving the Cougars a two run lead.

Meanwhile, Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.) came in relief of Woods and spun three stellar innings of one-hit relief to secure the save.

The Scarlet and White's final run came in the seventh when Lauren Mackey (Dublin, N.H.) drove in Orangio with a base hit.

Up Next:
The Scarlet and White will return to the field on Monday with a pair of contests against Alverno (1:00 p.m.) and Rockford (3:00 p.m.).
