The Lead: The Cougars of Clark University and the Beavers of Babson College battled it out for a total of 110 minutes in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action to ultimately end in a 1-1 tie on a hot afternoon at Granger Soccer Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Beavers got on the board first with six minutes remaining in the first half. Junior Kathryn Clark (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) received a cross pass from her teammate Julia Janikies (Coventry, R.I.) and found space behind Clark goalkeeper, Julianna Christy (Plainville, Conn.) for the 1-0 lead.
-The Beavers were able to hold onto the lead to head into the halftime break on top (1-0).
-The Cougars wasted no time and tied the score up just three minutes into play. A Babson foul resulted in a free kick for Clark right outside of the visitor's goalie box.
-Katie Barber (East Hampton, Conn.) launched the free kick over Beaver goalkeeper, Maddison Gierschick (Hopkinton, Mass.) to tie the game at one apiece (1-1).
-The two teams battled it out on both ends of the field for the remaining 42 minutes before heading into their first overtime.
-Deanna D'Innocenzo (Medway, Mass.) posted two shots in the first overtime while Gierschick recorded a save for the visitors. Tough defense from both teams forced a second overtime period.
-The Beavers got the first shot off in the second overtime period but Christy came up with a huge stop for the Cougars to keep the score tied a 1-1 with just eight minutes to play.
-Clark would get the last shot on net from Joelle Krause (Kennebunkport, Maine) and Gierschick notched another save to finish the game with a final score of 1-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-The Cougars outshot the Beavers 19 (12 on goal) to 16 (nine on goal).
-Christy made eight saves for the home team while Gierschick made 10 saves for Babson.
-The Beavers held an advantage in corner kicks as they were granted four and the Cougars were granted three.

-Clark University travels to Elms College for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match-up on Tuesday, Sept. 26th.
