Softball Takes Two Wins on Day Two in Florida

THE BASICS

-Score Game #1: Clark University 10, New Jersey City University (NJCU) 1

-Score Game #2: Clark University 7, Rivier University 6 (8 Innings)

-Records: Clark (3-1), NJCU (0-3), Rivier (0-3)

-Location: Naples, Fla. (North Collier Park Field)

-The Lead: The Clark University softball team picked up two more wins on day two in Naples, Fla. Lead by another no-hitter performance by senior pitcher Sami West (Gonic, N.H.), Clark downed NJCU 10-1 in the first game of the day before earning a 7-6 victory in extra innings over Rivier University in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game #1: Clark 10, NJCU 1

-Jessica Urella (North Grafton, Mass.), Anjelica Gonzalez (Merrimack, N.H.), West, and Leah Bodin (Andover, Vt.) combined for Clark's four hits in the victory. Urella led the Cougars with three RBIs

-Clark posted three runs in the top of the second inning on a few errors by NJCU and added four more runs in the top of the fifth when Bodin singled to left field to score Christina Kopacz (North  Grosvenordale, Conn.) and Urella sent a double to left field that scored three runners: Bodin, Francesca Cocca (Tewksbury, Mass.), and Isabella DiOrio (Lincoln, R.I.).

-West also earned an RBI when she sent a ball up the middle to score Kopacz in the top of the sixth.

-Another NJCU throwing error in the top of the seventh inning gave Clark the ultimate 10-1 victory.

-West pitched no-hitter. She went seven innings and struck out 13 batters. She improves to 2-0 on the season.

Game #2: Clark 7, Rivier 6 (8 Innings)

-Bodin went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Clark to victory over Rivier.

-DiOrio was 1-for-4 with one RBI while Francesca Cocca went 2-for-5 with three runs.

-Brenna Foley (Charlton, Mass.) earned the win for Clark when she came in to pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning and struck out one batter. West took the save for the Cougars when she came in to pitch in the eighth inning and faced three batters with no runs scored.

-Foley improves to 1-1 on the season.

UP NEXT

-Clark faces Waynesburg University on Monday, March 5th at 9:00 a.m. and Pitt-Bradford at 11:00 a.m. at Century Link Sports Complex in Naples, Fla.
