-The Lead: The Clark University softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games with the Lancers of Worcester State University on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Worcester State 16, Clark 7 – 5 innings
-The Lancers took a 9-0 lead with three runs scored in the first inning and six more in the top of the third. One more in the top of the fourth started by a double from senior Sydney Despres (Sterling, Mass.) and finished with a sacrifice fly by sophomore Becky Brandeberry (Phillipston, Mass.) gave Worcester state a 10-0 advantage.
-Clark was able to cut their lead in half with a five-run bottom of the fourth. With two outs an error by the Lancers sent freshman Jessica Urella (North Grafton, Mass.) over home plate and a single through the left side by her classmate Alexis Redish (Howell, N.J.) scored Taylor Erickson (Natick, Mass.) (10-2). First year Hanna Genell (Ambler, Penn.) sent a two-RBI single to right centerfield and Urella earned an RBI when Genell came home (10-5).
-The Lancers responded with six runs of their own in the top of the fifth including a three-RBI homer by Dakota Smith-Porter (Montague, Mass.) extended their lead to 16-5.
-Clark was able to rally two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Genell singled to first base for another RBI, but Worcester State made a game ending double play to take game one in five innings, 16-7.
-Genell led the Cougars at the plate going 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Urella and Redish both went 1-for-2 with an RBI in the setback.
-Smith-Porter led the Lancers going 3-for-3 with seven RBIs in the victory. Sydney Despres was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs for Worcester State.
-Sophomore Carly Zielinski (Monson, Mass.) earned the win pitching four complete innings and allowing just one earned run.
Game 2: Worcester State 7, Clark 3
-Worcester State took the first lead of a game when Despres homered in the top of the first inning for the 1-0 lead.
-The Cougars took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the third. Freshman Kelsey Joyce (Leominster, Mass.) started things off with a single to right center and a sacrifice bunt from Christina Kopacz (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) moved her to second. Senior Leah Bodin (Andover, Vt.) earned an RBI when she singled through the right side to score Joyce.
-An error by the visitors helped Urella and Bodin cross home plate and the Cougars took the 3-1 lead.
-The Lancers regained the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth when Kaiulano Ennis (Swansea, Mass.) launched a homerun over the left field fence that scored Monica Ferrazzani (North Reading, Mass.) and Brandeberry (4-3). Two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth including a homerun and an RBI single from Kaci Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) gave Worcester State the ultimate 7-3 victory.
-Ennis went 2-for-5 with three RBIs to lead the Lancers. Rachel Frisch (Worcester, Mass.) improved to 4-3 pitching all seven innings for Worcester State with six strikeouts and just one earned run.
