Men's Lacrosse Soars to Victory Over Seahawks in Season Opener, 17-7

THE BASICS

-Score: Clark University 17, Salve Regina 7

-The Lead: After trailing early, visiting Clark University used a 6-1 scoring run in the second quarter to retake the lead en route to a 17-7 victory over the Salve Regina University men's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Junior Chris Rasco (Huntington, N.Y.) scored to open the game for the Cougars, but three unanswered goals from the Seahawks gave the home team a 3-1 edge after one quarter.

-Clark opened the second quarter by scoring the first four goals, including three more from Rasco to give him four in the first half, and giving the Cougars a 5-3 lead.

-Brendan Kelly (Long Beach, N.Y.) answered to draw the Seahawks within a goal, but Clark would score the next five goals spanning halftime. In total the Cougars outscored the Seahawks 16-4 to close the game and secure a double-digit victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Clark senior Brandon King (Eastham, Mass.) scored five times on nine shots and handed out three assists.

-Rasco scored five times, four in the first half, and also dished out an assist.

-Clark senior goalkeeper, Nathan Maselek (Marblehead, Mass.) stopped 14 of 19 shots to pick up the win in net for the Cougars.

-Seven different men scored for the Cougars. Along with King and Rasco scoring five each, Jack Mandracchia (Melrose, Mass.) potted three goals and Jack Pierce (Westborough, Mass.), Mark DellaTorre (Bethany, Conn.), Noah Skole (Longmeadow, Mass.), and Andrew Hollerbach (West Hartford, Conn.) each scored a single goal.

-Mike Sullivan (Exter, N.H.) made his first collegiate start for the Seahawks and made 14 saves. Griffin Ketcham (Ganesvoort, N.Y.) came on in relief logged 8:36 of action and made two saves.

-Pat Leary (Wakefield, Mass.) paced the Seahawks offense, scoring three times. Bailey Strangis (Whitman, Mass.) scored twice for the Seahawks in the final minutes. He was the only other Seahawks with multiple goals. Sean Fitzgerald (Guilford, Conn.) scored the first of his career and the first of the Seahawks season in the first quarter. Kelly's goal in the second period was the only for the Seahawks in that frame.

-The Cougars went 4-for-6 on the man-up while the Seahawks came up empty on their four opportunities with the man advantage.

-Clark won 17 of 26 face-offs with junior Bobby Philbin (Ridgefield, Conn.) finishing 10-for-13 in the circle.
