GAME ONE

THE BASICS

-Score Drew University 2, Clark University 1 (9 Innings)

-Records: Clark (2-1), Drew (1-0)

-Location: Naples, Florida (North Collier Park)

-The Lead: The Clark University softball team dropped a pair of games with Drew University and Kenyone College on Sunday afternoon in day two of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Naples, Florida. Drew waled off with the 2-1 victory in game one of the day before the Lords of Kenyon College took home a 7-2 victory in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-After seven scoreless innings, Clark got on the board in the top of the eighth when senior Kendra Walker (Cumberland, R.I.) doubled to score senior Olivia Barksdale (Fort Washington, Md.) (1-0).

-Drew responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth when a double from sophomore Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J.) scored first year Makayla Sosa (South Plainfield, N.J.) from second base.

-After strong defense produced three quick outs, Drew found a way to cross one more run in the bottom of the ninth inning to walk away with the victory. Sophomore Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) was placed at second to start the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice ground out. Sophomore Sophie Sirota (Windsor, Conn.) sent a sacrifice fly ball to centerfield to send Rodriguez home for the 2-1 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Walker led the Cougars at the plate with a 2-for-3 showing and one RBI.

-Vera was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Sirota was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

-Junior Sarah Woods (Littleton, Mass.) pitched 8.2 innings, struck out five batters, allowed six hits and two unearned runs. She falls to 0-1 this season.

-Senior Cara O'Leary (Staten Island, N.Y.) went all nine innings for Drew, struck out five batters, allowed five hits and one run scored.

GAME TWO

THE BASICS

-Score: Kenyon College 7, Clark University 2

-Records: Clark (2-2), Kenyon (2-0)

-Location: Naples, Fla.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Clark had a few opportunities to score within the first three innings as it attained five hits, but senior pitcher Austen Whibley (Silver Spring, Md.) and the Ladies' defense buckled down to keep the score at 0-0 before the Kenyon bats came alive.

-In the first, Walker and JC Urella (North Grafton, Mass.) had back-to-back singles before Whibley and company got out of the jam. An unassisted groundout anBritneyd strikeout ended the threat.

-After a scoreless second, Clark had another chance to take the lead. A single into right field from first year Kylie McCabe (Rumson, N.J.) was picked up by Kathryn Riggs who then threw out first year Devan Galli (North Adams, Mass.) at home.

-That spark carried over to the home half of the third when the Ladies took the lead.

-After singles from Sara Campagna (Saint Charles, Ill.) and Britny Patterson (Corona, Calif.), Lauren Graf (Allen Park, Mich.) added a single of her own through the left side to push Grace Finn (Escondido, Calif.) across home plate. In the next at-bat, Emily Buckwalter (Phoenixville, Penn.) smacked a double that bounced over the fence, pushing the lead to 3-0. Kenyon added three more runs the rest of the frame including two by error.

-The Cougars never regrouped after that seven-run frame by the Ladies. Clark's only runs of the game came in the sixth inning which brought the tally to 7-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Urella led Clark at the plate going 3-for-4. Isabella DiOrio (Lincoln, R.I.) went 2-for-4 with one RBI for the Cougars.

-Buckwalter and Olivia Hurley (Bloomington, In) led Kenyon's offense with two RBI each. In the circle, Whibley tossed five innings, did not allow any runs, struck out five and induced five groundouts.

UP NEXT

-Clark is set to take on Albion and Drew on Monday, March 4th at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at North Collier Park in Napes, Florida.
