Men's Lacrosse Powers Past Wheaton, 19-1

THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Clark University men's lacrosse team racked up 19 goals from nine different players en-route to a 19-1 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over the Lyons of Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Clark took a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter led by three goals from junior Chris Rasco (Huntington, N.Y.). Senior Jack Pierce (Westborough, Mass.) opened up scoring on a feed from junior Andrew Hollerbach (West Hartford, Conn.) at the 11:54 mark and first year Noah Skole (Longmeadow, Mass.) followed up just a minute later on an assist from junior Jack Mandracchia (Melrose, Mass.). Rasco finished the quarter with his three unanswered goals for the 5-0 advantage.

-The Cougars added four more goals in the second stanza to pull ahead 9-0 before the break. Junior Bobby Philbin (Ridgefield, Conn.) won the face-off and found the back of the net just 30 seconds into play (6-0). Pierce tallied his second goal with 12:43 on the clock and Skole followed up with his second goal of the game under a minute later. Junior Owen Lamerson (Greenlawn, N.Y.) took advantage of a man-up situation when he netted his first goal of the game on an assist from Pierce.

-Clark used five more goals in the third period to pull ahead 14-0. Mandracchia, Pierce, first year Jacob Brydson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), sophomore Jacob Brandes (Chappaqua, N.Y.), and sophomore Tyler Vincent (Sammamish, Wash.) all tallied goals in the run.

-The visitors notched three more goals in the first nine minutes of the final quarter before Wheaton was able to break the run at a shut-out with an unassisted goal from senior CJ Leighton (Falmouth, Maine) at the 5:42 mark. Two more goals from Rasco and Vincent gave the Cougars the final 19-1 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Rasco led Clark's offense with five points from four goals and an assist on the day. Mandracchia added five points on four assists and a goal while Pierce put up four points from his three goals and one assist. Lamerson and Brandes each added two goals and two assists while Hollerbach finished with four assists in the victory.

-First year Mark Zito (Lincoln, R.I.) finished 12-for-14 in face-offs with a team-high seven groundballs. Philbin went 6-for-9 in face-offs as the Cougars finished 18-for-23 overall.

-Senior Nathan Maselek (Marblehead, Mass.) improves to 7-6 overall with 14 saves in net for the Cougars.

-Chandler Miller falls to 6-5 on the season for Wheaton and made 12 saves in the setback.

-Clark travels to Skidmore College on Wednesday, April 17th for a non-conference game at 6:00 p.m.

-Wheaton heads to Babson on the same day for a NEWMAC contest at 7:00 p.m.
