Cravinho Nets Game-Winner in Fourth Quarter to Lift Field Hockey to Thrilling 1-0 Victory Against UMass Dartmouth

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Clark University field hockey junior Abbe Cravinho scored the game winning goal with six minutes left in regulation to help guide the Cougars (2-5-0) to a 1-0 win over the visiting Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth (2-6-0) on Tuesday night from Granger Field.

Coach Kurzanski's Thoughts

"I'm really proud of our effort today," said head coach Kate Kurzanski following the victory. "Our kids played hard until the last whistle blew and I'm very pleased with how we played collectively as a unit. We were explosive on offense and our forwards and midfielders did a stellar job putting pressure on UMD's defense with a ton of shots and corners. Our defense had great poise and control on the defensive end as well. Overall, a great team win and I'm happy for Abbe to get her first goal of the season!

How it Happened

  • The Cougars got their offense rolling early with a series of early penalty corners. Senior Emma Boland attempted three penalty corners in the seventh minute, and although the Cougars were unable to convert, they got great looks from sophomore Rachael Romain, junior Abbe Cravinho, and graduate student Anna Joyce.
  • The Cougars started the second half aggressive. Two minutes into the half, Joyce made a run up the side line and placed a beautiful cross into the circle where it found Cravinho's stick. Cravinho launched the shot, just wide of the goal.
  • Boland attempted another corner in the 51st minute and found Cravinho at the top of the circle who fired off a shot just wide. Boland found her way into the circle where she attempted to redirect the shot and missed just wide.
  • After 54 minutes of scoreless play, the Cougars took the lead with just under six minutes to play when Cravinho dribbled around UMASS's keeper after a pass from Joyce and found the back of the net. (1-0)
  • Senior keeper Grace Sawyer stopped what could have been the game tying goal in the 59th minute, for her first and last save of the day.

Inside the Box Score

  • Cravinho scored the only goal of the day in the 54th minute. This is her first goal of the year and the first game-winner of her career.
  • The Cougars lead the way with 20 shots (eight on goal) while the Corsairs took only five (one on goal).
  • Clark also led the way in penalty corners, drawing 14 corners to UMass Dartmouth's five.
