Men's Soccer Edged 2-1 by WNE on Saturday

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Clark University men's soccer (1-1-0) fell 2-1 in a non-conference match against Western New England (1-0-1) on Saturday afternoon from Supernant Field.

Senior Alex Maiorano netted Clark's goal in the 18th minute. Sophomore Andrew DiStefano recorded six saves in the match.

Coach O'Toole's Thoughts

"Despite the end result, we continue to create multiple great scoring chances, including hitting the post late in the second half," said O'Toole following the match. "We went up against a physical, counterattacking team that made the most of their scoring moments today. As a group we know we need to be more clinical in the final third and will make adjustments for tomorrow."

How it Happened

  • Junior Connor Fitzgerald recorded the first shot on goal of the game in the fifth minute when he fired a shot to the right side of the goal, but the shot was saved and DiStefano then weathered WNE's three shots on goal as he stopped all three.
  • The Golden Bears got on the board in the 15th minute with a goal from Malik Serisser, but the Cougars immediately answered as Maiorano received a through ball, made two moves past the defenders and beat the keeper top right as Clark tied the match at 1-1 in the 18th minute.
  • Both defenses controlled the rest of the half as sophomore Teddy Donahue attempted the Cougars final shot of the half in the 43rd minute as the game remained tied entering the half.
  • Maiorano fired another shot that reached goal in the 46th minute that was saved before WNE broke through with a go-ahead goal in the 53rd minute from Mike Milazzo.
  • First-year Lucas Saia came right back down the pitch and put a shot on goal that was saved and DiStefano denied a WNE chance in the 56th minute.
  • Clark's offense continued to apply pressure as Saia again had a look at goal stopped in the 69th minute, sophomore Anyolo Makatiani fired a shot that was saved in the 73rd minute and another one that hit the left post in the 78th minute.
  • First-year William Lopez attempted a shot in the 85th minute that was denied and the Cougars last chance came in the 89th minute when Makatiani had his shot stopped as WNE came out on top.
