Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. - Clark University women's soccer junior Siobhan Lounsbury scored her first goal of the season in the in 86th minute to lift Clark (1-0-0) past the Lancers of Worcester State (0-2-0) on Saturday afternoon from Granger Field.
The goal was all the offense that the scarlet and white needed after a strong shoutout performance from senior goalkeeper Morgan Small bolstered the Cougars' winning effort.
Coach Smith and Siobhan Lounsbury's Thoughts
"Happy to get the first win of the season," stated Smith following the win. "We have a lot of players that were able to get their first minutes in a college game and we saw some good things. There was a lot to learn from as well. We look forward to breaking down the film, and using the next few days to prepare for Brandeis.
"I was able to get a good touch on the ball and separate from my defender," said Lounsbury on what she saw on the game-winning goal. "I looked up and saw that I could beat the goalie with a quick strike and I hit it well. I'm so excited to get the first win! "
How it Happened
- Clark senior Mia Advocate took the first shot of the year for the Cougars near the nine the minute mark.
- The Cougars continued to attack early with shots by Haley Berkowitz, Emma Tziachris, and an on goal shot by first year Isabella Ramirez in the 13th minute.
- In the 40th minute Small recorded her first save of the season on a shot from Haley Mignon of WSU.
- The first half also featured Sarah Berube taking six corner kicks for the Cougars.
- Following a tooth and nail start to the second half, with Small making two saves in the 65th minute before WSU goalkeeper Ashley Spellman saved a shot from Clark first year Imani Salazar.
- Clark nearly broke the defensive stalemate when senior Jamie Joseph hit the crossbar in the 67th minute.
- Lounsbury finally broke the tie in the 86th minute, seizing her opportunity with a well-placed high corner shot.
- The Cougars kept the Lancers on the defensive for the final few minutes to seal the victory.
