Softball Falls to WPI on Senior Day

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University softball team (5-15, 1-13 NEWMAC) hosted its senior day against WPI (23-9, 9-5 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon from the O'Brien Softball Field, but dropped both games.

Prior to the game, seniors Kaylee Gibson, Francesca Cirone, and Jess Martin were recognized for their contributions to Clark softball.

Clark fell 9-2 game and 10-5 in game two.   

Game One: WPI 9, Clark 2

  • After WPI scored three runs in the top of the first, Gibson got Clark on the board with a single to left field that plated two runs in sophomore Rebecca Mauro and junior Eliza Lindberg to make it 3-2 in the bottom of the first.
  • Martin singled to left field in the bottom of the second and Cirone singled to short in the third, but both were left on base.
  • Lindberg recorded a bunt single in the bottom of the fifth and the Cougars got a pair of runners on base as Martin walked and Gibson singled, but neither came around to score in the bottom of the sixth as Clark fell 9-2.

Game Two: WPI 10, Clark 5

  • Junior Nicole Buckley took the mound in game two and only allowed one run through two innings of action in which the Cougars got the bases loaded in the bottom of the first as Martin was on first, Cirone was on second, and Lindberg was on third, but the Engineers got out of the jam.
  • After WPI added two runs in the top of the third and in the bottom of the third, Cirone and Gibson both singled, but both were left on base.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Cirone got Clark on the board with an RBI triple that scored junior Natalie Stilwell and Cirone came around to score on a passed ball to make it a 4-2 game.
  • WPI pushed the lead to 10-2, but Clark's offense responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh led by a two-RBI single to center field from Martin and an RBI from junior Reilly Bronson as the Cougars fell 10-5.

What's Next

Clark will be back in action on Tuesday when they play their final home series of the year against Nichols beginning at 3:00 p.m.
