Men's Soccer Edged 3-2 in Home Opener Against WNE

WORCESTER, Mass. - Clark men's soccer (0-2) played their first home match of the season against WNE (1-1), but were edged 3-2 in a back-and-forth contest on Saturday afternoon from Granger Field.

How it Happened

  • First-year Diego Marin faced a couple of dangerous opportunities early in the game and came away with three saves within the first six minutes of the match.
  • Sophomore William Lopez created a chance in the 21st minute of the match, but the goalie came away with the save.
  • The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute off a goal from Carlson Rose.
  • Senior Ezekiel Palmer tied the game seven minutes later in the 33rd minute when he put a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal to make it a 1-1 game.
  • Marin stopped the last shot attempt on goal of the half in the 42nd minute as the teams entered the break in a 1-1 tie.
  • After WNE hit the post in the 56th minute, junior Anyolo Makatiani gave Clark the lead when Lopez dribbled the ball up the pitch and passed it over to Makatiani and the junior found the back of the net to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute.
  • WNE tied the game in the 67th minute when Sean Lanzillo found the back of the net.
  • Marin registered two critical saves after the goal, but the Golden Bears broke through in the 79th minute with a goal from Jayden Montagna to give WNE a 3-2 lead.
  • Lopez registered Clark's last shot on goal in the 87th minute, but the WNE goalkeeper registered the save as WNE won 3-2.
