Volleyball Rallies to 3-1 Victory Against Wellesley

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University volleyball team (12-7, 3-4 NEWMAC) played their first of three straight home games when they welcomed Wellesley (8-9, 2-5 NEWMAC) to the Kneller and came away with a 3-1 victory over the Blue on Saturday afternoon in the team's play with pride game.

Clark took the first set 25-21, fell 25-23 in the second, won 25-13 in the third, and registered a 25-11 victory in the deciding set.

How it Happened
  • The Cougars jumped out to an early 6-2 lead as seniors Sheyenne Williams and Victoria Pastor recorded kills before the Blue scored six unanswered.
  • Senior Sofia Scherrer del Llano, Williams, senior Camille Flurry, graduate student Cameron Gill, and Pastor each recorded points over the next 10 plays as the team's traded points to tie the match at 12-12 and a block from junior Camille Sterling and a pair of Blue attack errors extended the lead to 15-12.
  • Tied 16-16, Scherrer del Llano and Gill each recorded kills and later in the set, Flurry recorded three straight kills and capped off the set with a kill off a feed from sophomore Yumeng Liu to give Clark a 25-21 first set win.
  • The second set started back and forth as the match was tied at 9-9 sparked by a pair of kills from Gill before the Blue extended their lead to 13-10.
  • A block from Sterling pulled Clark within one and a kill from Scherrer del Llano helped the scarlet and white tie the set up at 18-18 and after trailing 22-19, the Cougars ripped off three straight points with kills from Gill and Williams, but the Blue took the set 25-23.
  • Tied 3-3 in the third set, Clark scored four unanswered as Scherrer del Llano recorded a kill off a feed from first-year Julia Dopazo and a service ace pushed the edge to 7-3.
  • Despite two more kills from Scherrer del Llano and Flurry, the Blue cut the deficit to 15-12 before Clark ended the set on a 10-1 run as Williams recorded three kills, Flurry and Gill each added one, and Flurry registered a pair of blocks to take the set 25-13.
  • Clark jumped out to a 6-2 edge in the fourth set sparked by three kills from Flurry, with the last on a feed from junior Yvanna Torres as well as kills from Scherrer del Llano and Williams.
  • After the Blue cut the deficit to 11-8, the scarlet and white went on an 8-1 run led by a Scherrer del Llano ace, kills and a block from Williams and Gill pushed the Cougar edge to 19-9.
  • Flurry added two more kills and a block from Flurry and Sterling to end the match helped Clark earn a 25-11 win.
Inside the Box Score
  • Clark recorded 52 kills, 14 blocks, 76 digs, and dished out 49 assists.
  • Flurry registered a team-leading 15 kills and six blocks.
  • Williams added 12 kills and six blocks.
  • Scherrer del Llano also reached double-figures with 10 kills.
  • Liu recorded a team-leading 18 digs.
  • Dopazo dished out 28 assists and Torres added 15 helpers.
What's Next
Clark will be back in action on Tuesday night with a home match against Babson beginning at 7:00 p.m. from the Kneller Gymnasium.
