Volleyball Hands Babson First NEWMAC Loss With Convincing 3-0 Victory

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University volleyball team (13-7, 4-4 NEWMAC) handed Babson (19-2, 7-1 NEWMAC) their first NEWMAC loss of the season and first win over the Beavers since 2016 with a convincing 3-0 win on Tuesday night against from the Kneller Gymnasium.

Clark took the first set 25-17, the second set 25-18, and the final set 25-20.

How it Happened
  • After Clark opened the match with a 6-5 lead, senior Camille Flurry and graduate student Cameron Gill each recorded kills and a junior Yvanna Torres service ace extended the edge to 10-5.
  • The Cougars went on another mini run with four points, including kills from Pastor and Flurry to go up 14-7 and after Babson pulled with five at 17-12, seniors Sheyenne Williams and senior Sofia Scherrer del Llano registered kills to take a 20-12 advantage.
  • Gill, Pastor, and Flurry each recorded kills before the end of the set and Flurry ended the set with a block to give Clark a 25-17 win in set one.
  • Tied 4-4 in set two, Torres found Flurry and Pastor for kills to help the Cougars score three unanswered to give them a 7-4 edge.
  • Trailing 11-9, the scarlet and white ripped off six unanswered points led by a service ace from Pastor and a Gill block to go up 15-11.
  • Torres found junior Camille Sterling to extend the lead to as much as five before the Beavers pulled within four at 22-18, but Clark recorded three straight points as sophomore Yumeng Liu, Pastor, and Gill all scored to give the Cougars a 25-18 win in set two.
  • Clark jumped out to a 5-1 edge in the third set led by a kill from Williams off a feed from first-year Julia Dopazo and after Babson took an 8-7 lead, Sterling recorded a kill and an attack error from the Beavers put the Cougars on top 9-8.
  • With the set tied at 9-9, the Cougars rattled off three straight points including a kill from Sterling and a dual block from Pastor and Sterling to go up 12-9 and ripped off three unanswered in the middle of the set, sparked by a pair of Scherrer del Llano kills to take a 16-11 edge.
  • Up as many as six off a service ace from Scherrer del Llano, the Beavers pulled within four at 19-15 before Sterling and Flurry added a pair of kills to extend the edge back to six.
  • Up 22-20, the scarlet and white put Babson away with a kill from Scherrer del Llano, an attack error from the Beavers, and a block from Williams to win the final set 25-20.
Inside the Box Score
  • Clark recorded 31 kills, four blocks, 47 digs, and dished out 29 assists.
  • Scherrer del Llano registered a team-leading seven kills.
  • Flurry added six kills.
  • Torres led the squad with 15 assists and Dopazo added nine helpers.
  • Liu recorded a team-leading 11 digs and Gill registered nine.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to the court for a home match on Friday to round out a three-game homestand against Trinity beginning at 6:00 p.m. from the Kneller Gymnasium.
