WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University volleyball team (13-8) ended a three-game homestand with a non-conference contest against Trinity (13-5) on Friday night from the Kneller Gymnasium and despite winning the first two sets, were edged 3-2.
Clark took the first set 25-23, the second set 25-13, fell 25-16 in the third, 25-19 in the fourth, and in the deciding set lost 15-9.
How it Happened
- Up 7-5 early in the first set off a pair of kills from senior Sheyenne Williams and a Pastor kill, Clark scored five unanswered, including a pair of Pastor kills off passes from junior Yvanna Torres and sophomore Yumeng Liu as well as a pair of graduate student Cameron Gill service aces as the Cougars led 12-5.
- After the Bantams rallied to take an 18-16 lead, the Cougars recorded three points capped off by a Torres service ace to take a 19-18 edge and again rallied from down one at 22-21 with two kills from Pastor and a dual block from Gill and Williams to take the set 25-23.
- The scarlet and white led 6-5 before rattling off four straight points, including a kill from Pastor to go up 10-5 and later in the set the Cougars rattled off five unanswered points as Gill tallied two more kills and Torres recorded a service ace to go up 19-10.
- First-year Winifred Gakidis and Pastor each added kills at the end of the set as the Cougars took the second set 25-13.
- Trinity jumped out to an early 11-2 lead in the third set before Williams recorded an assist and junior Camille Sterling tallied a block as Clark trailed 11-5.
- Sterling added a kill and a block for the Cougars next two points and graduate student Ava Spach recorded a kill and a block over the rest of the set as Trinity won 25-16.
- Down 6-1 to open the fourth set, Clark rallied with six unanswered points as Sterling and Pastor tallied kills to give the Cougars a 7-6 lead.
- Williams and Gill recorded kills off passes from first-year Julia Dopazo to go up 11-8, but Trinity rallied to take an 18-15 edge.
- First-year Harper Chinn added a kill and a bad set from the Bantams brought the Cougars within four, but ultimately fell 25-19 in the set.
- Williams recorded a pair of kills early in the fifth set to make it a 5-3 contest before Gill and Pastor added kills to tie the set at 7-7.
- Trinity rallied to score the next six points and Sterling and a Trinity attack error went down as Clark's final two points as they fell 15-9.
Inside the Box Score
- Clark recorded 46 kills, eight blocks, 68 digs, and dished out 46 assists.
- Pastor led the squad with 15 kills and added 13 digs.
- Williams recorded 11 kills and four blocks.
- Torres dished out 21 assists and Dopazo added 20 helpers.
- Liu registered 19 digs and Gill tallied 14 digs.
What's Next
Clark will return to the court tomorrow for a pair of matches starting with a neutral site match against Lasell at 1:00 p.m. from Simmons College and at 3:00 p.m., the Cougars will take on Simmons.
