Men's Soccer Falls to WPI on Wednesday

WORCESTER, Mass. - Clark men's soccer (3-9-3, 1-4-1 NEWMAC) welcomed crosstown rival WPI (6-3-6, 4-1-1 NEWMAC) to Granger and fell 3-1 to the Engineers on Wednesday night.

How it Happened
  • WPI struck early in the match as Anthony Previte serviced in a free kick that found the foot of Anthony Coutts and Coutts finished the play to give them a 1-0 edge.
  • After both defenses dominated for the next 25 minutes after the goal, junior Lucas Saia was able to get behind the Engineer defense, but had his shot saved by Martin in the 31st minute.
  • Clark tied the match in the 36th minute when junior William Lopez put a shot towards goal that hit a WPI defender and went in to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Saia, Makatiani, and Lopez each put shots on goal before the half as the offense created more chances, but all were saved and senior Andrew DiStefano stopped three shots before the break as the teams were tied 1-1 at the half.
  • WPI scored 37 seconds into the second half after a save from DiStefano as Francesco Valagussa followed the play up with a goal.
  • Saia nearly tied the match in the 51st minute, but had his shot saved and Donahue put a shot on goal that was stopped in the 58th minute.
  • The Engineers added another goal in the 74th minute and before the end of the match, sophomore Mauro Perez Colon put a shot on goal that was saved as the Engineers won 3-1.
