Volleyball Topped by Wheaton in Five Sets

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University volleyball team (10-6, 2-3 NEWMAC) closed out a three-game homestand with a home match against Wheaton (9-5, 1-4 NEWMAC) and were edged 3-2 by the Lyons on Tuesday night from the Kneller Gymnasium.

Clark took the first set 25-17, fell 25-23 in the second, dropped the third 25-22, won the fourth set 25-21, and were edged 15-11 in the deciding set.

How it Happened
  • The Cougars took an early 6-4 lead in the first set as seniors Camille Flurry and Sheyenne Williams each recorded kills.
  • After the Lyons pulled to within one at 12-11, Clark went on a 5-2 run sparked by kills from Flurry and Williams as well as block assists from Flurry and Williams to put the Cougars up 17-13.
  • After three straight Lyons points, Clark ended the set on a 8-1 run led by a pair of service aces from sophomore Yumeng Liu and a pair of kills from senior Victoria Pastor to give the scarlet and white a 25-17 set one win.
  • Clark opened the second set with a 5-2 edge thanks to kills from junior Camille Sterling, Flurry, and Pastor off feeds from junior Yvanna Torres and after leading 9-7, the Cougars rattled off four straight points led by kills from Williams and Pastor as well as a block from Torres and Sterling.
  • Williams recorded another block later in the set to make it 17-13 and with the set tied at 18-18, the Cougars rattled off five unanswered points including a pair of Liu service aces, but Wheaton scored the final seven points of the set as the Lyons took the set 25-23.
  • In the third set Clark held an early 7-5 lead sparked by a pair of kills from both Pastor and senior Sofia Scherrer del Llano, but Wheaton went on a 7-0 run to go up 12-7.
  • With Clark trailing 22-13, they went on an 8-1 run led by three kills from Williams to make it 23-21, but Wheaton scored two of the sets final three points to take the set 25-22.
  • With the fourth set tied at 5-5, the scarlet and white took four of the next five points, including a kill from Sterling to go up 9-6.
  • A block from Pastor later in the set and a kill from Sterling helped extend the lead to 18-12 and a service ace from Pastor extended the lead to as many as seven points, but the Lyons fought back to make it 22-19 before Wheaton committed a pair of attack errors down the stretch as Clark took the set 25-21.
  • Clark took an early 3-1 lead in the pivotal fifth set with kills from Sterling and Scherrer del Llano, but the Lyons scored the next four points to go up 5-3.
  • Pastor recorded a kill and a bad set from the Lyons brought Clark back within one, but Wheaton scored the next three points to take a 9-5 lead.
  • Kills from Williams and Pastor brought Clark within two, but Wheaton answered with three more points before a Williams kill from Torres made it a 12-8 contest.
  • Down 14-8, Clark scored the next three points headlined by a kill from Pastor, but the Lyons were able to come away with a 15-11 win in the deciding set.

  • Clark recorded 49 kills, five aces, eight blocks, 78 digs, and dished out 44 assists.
  • Pastor led the squad with 17 kills and added 14 digs.
  • Williams added 14 kills and four blocks.
  • Liu recorded a team-leading 21 digs and four service aces.
  • Torres recorded 39 assists.
