Women's Basketball Drops First Game of Season Against Wesleyan

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (4-1) hosted their third of a three-game homestand against Wesleyan (3-1) and dropped their first game of the year, 92-73 to the Cardinals on Tuesday night from the Kneller Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • Clark opened the game on a 10-5 run as first-year Kailey Rios and senior Jacqueline Faulise each hit triples and graduate student Sarah Zambrano and senior Alaina Schatzabel also scored.
  • The Cardinals climbed back into the game and took a 14-12 lead before first-year Catherine Antwi stole the ball and made a layup on the other end to tie the game at 14-14 with 4:09 to go in the first.
  • Clark then went on a 6-5 run as Antwi, Faulise, and Schatzabel all scored to go up 20-19, but a Maggie Lee layup gave Wesleyan a 21-20 lead after one quarter of play.
  • The Cardinals pushed the lead to six, but Schatzabel connected on two more layups to cut the deficit to four, but Wesleyan scored seven unanswered to go up 35-24.
  • Rios ended the run with a made triple off a feed from Antwi and Rios added six more points over the next two minutes, capped off by an and-one layup to pull Clark within four at 36-33 with 3:38 left in the second.
  • Zambrano and Schatzabel each scored before the end of the half as Wesleyan took a 43-37 lead into the break.
  • Clark scored seven unanswered to open the third quarter as Rios and Schatzabel scored and first-year Emma Drefs connected on a triple to give Clark a 44-43 edge.
  • Down four with 6:26 remaining in the third, Zambrano buried a jumper to get within two, before the Cardinals pushed the lead to five at 54-49.
  • Rios responded with another triple to make it a 54-52 game, but Wesleyan ended the quarter on a 12-2 run as Zambrano scored the Cougars final points of the quarter as the Cardinals led 66-54 going into the fourth.
  • A pair of made free throws from Drefs and a Rios triple cut the deficit to seven and after the teams traded buckets, Schatzabel connected on an and-one with 6:59 to go to make it a 72-64 contest.
  • Wesleyan answered with eight of the next nine points to push the lead to 15 and Clark got as close as 13 on a made layup from Faulise, but the Cardinals pulled away with a 92-73 win.
Inside the Box Score
  • Clark grabbed 36 rebounds, dished out 13 assists, and forced 18 turnovers.
  • Rios netted a team-leading 21 points and connected on five three-pointers.
  • Schatzabel added 19 points and nine rebounds.
  • Zambrano also reached double-figures with 11 points and pulled down six rebounds.
  • Faulise led the team with six steals and four assists, while adding eight points.
What's Next
The Cougars will close out the homestand with a contest against Hartford on Sunday beginning at 2:00 p.m. from the Kneller.
