Strong Defensive Effort Leads Women's Basketball Past Hartford

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (5-1) closed out their three-game homestand with an impressive 61-33 win over Hartford (2-2) on Sunday afternoon from the Kneller Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • The scarlet and white opened the game on a 15-0 run sparked by six points from first-year Kailey Rios, five from first-year Emma Drefs, and points from both senior Alaina Schatzabel and graduate student Sarah Zambrano as Clark held Hartford scoreless for nearly the first seven minutes of play.
  • First-year Olivia Shipley added four points and buckets from junior Kumi Tamura and senior Jacqueline Faulise helped the Cougars possess a 23-7 lead after one quarter of play.
  • Clark scored the first 11 points of the second quarter led by five more Rios points, a made triple from first-year Catherine Antwi, a Faulise layup, and Schatzabel free throw to extend their edge to 34-7.
  • The Hawks held Clark to just one basket over the final 4:22 of the half as Faulise scored before the half, but the Cougars only allowed five points all quarter as Clark took a 36-12 lead into the half.
  • Up 38-19, Clark responded with 10 unanswered as Rios and Antwi each hit three's and four free throws from Faulise extended the edge to 48-19 with 4:21 remaining in the third.
  • Junior Megan Swedberg scored three of Clark's final five points of the third as the Cougars took a 53-22 lead heading into the fourth.
  • Drefs led the team with three points in the fourth and Rios, Zambrano, and Antwi also scored as Clark came away with a 61-33 win.

  • Clark grabbed 55 rebounds, dished out 12 assists, and forced 16 turnovers.
  • Rios scored a team-leading 20 points on 8-13 shooting.
