Women's Basketball Edged by Salem State

SALEM, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (5-2) traveled to Salem State (5-2) for the first of a four-game road trip and were edged 70-64 by the Vikings on Wednesday night from Twohig Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • The scarlet and white jumped out to an early 7-3 lead as first-year Kailey Rios connected on a three and seniors Alaina Schatzabel and Jacqueline Faulise each scored.
  • The Vikings went on a run to take a 12-8 lead before first-year Catherine Antwi made a free throw and an and-one layup from Schatzabel made it a 13-12 game.
  • First-year Amarna Windross scored before the end of the first quarter as the Cougars trailed by four and Rios opened the second quarter with four straight points from Rios as the team trailed 24-18.
  • Salem State responded with seven unanswered points to go up 13 before junior Megan Swedberg made a layup to end the run and a made shot from Schatzabel before the half made it a 39-26 lead at the half.
  • Schatzabel and Rios scored the first four points out of the half as the team trailed by 18, but Clark stormed back with a 12-0 run sparked by points from Swedberg, Faulise, Schatzabel, Antwi, and Rios as the Cougars trailed 48-42.
  • Salem State was able to push the lead back up to 13 before Faulise and Schatzabel scored four unanswered to get back within nine at 59-50 and a made layup from Antwi cut the deficit back to seven with 1:53 remaining.
  • First-year Emma Drefs, Schatzabel, and Antwi scored down the stretch as Clark fell 70-64.
Inside the Box Score
  • Clark grabbed 49 rebounds, dished out seven assists, registered 12 steals, and forced 27 turnovers.
  • Schatzabel recorded a double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds.
  • Rios and Antwi each added 13 points.

The scarlet and white will return to the court on Saturday afternoon for a road match at Bridgewater State at 1:00 p.m.
