Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University women's lacrosse team (1-2) played their final game before Spring Break when they welcomed Mass. Maritime (0-1) to Granger Field and came away with a 9-6 win on Wednesday night.
The win marks interim head coach Ashley Steven's first victory with the program.
How it Happened
- Clark took an early 1-0 lead as sophomore Aubrey Conners knifed her way through the Maritime defense and beat the keeper to give the Cougars the edge with 11:23 to play in the first quarter.
- The Cougars extended their lead to 2-0 with 8:49 remaining in the first as senior Kiley Simmons found a cutting junior Greer McCarty and the junior found the back of the net.
- After Mass. Maritime cut the deficit to one, senior Maddie Conners recorded a save on a shot from Sydney McCarthy and the Cougars responded on their next possession with a goal from Simmons off a feed from Aubrey Conners to extend the lead to 3-1.
- The Buccaneers got a goal from Cassie Llewellyn to get back within one, but Simmons answered with her second goal of the game to push the advantage to 4-2 with 2:47 to play in the first.
- Maritime scored before the end of the quarter, but again Clark responded with a goal from McCarty off a feed from Simmons as the Cougars led 5-3.
- Sophomores Meghan Fogarty and Erin Lucas nearly added to the lead, but had shots saved before Simmons made it a 6-3 contest with a goal off a feed from senior Elizabeth Liakos with 3:37 to go in the second.
- Conners made a pair of critical saves before the half in a 6-3 game and out of the half, Llewellyn scored to get Maritime back within two at 6-4.
- Simmons netted her fourth goal of the game with 7:26 remaining in the third as Clark's lead jumped back to three at 7-4.
- Before the end of the quarter Fogarty created a chance with 0:04 to go that hit the post, nearly giving Clark a four-goal edge as the score remained 7-4.
- The Buccaneers made it a two-goal game again to open the fourth, but again Clark answered just over a minute later as senior Sophie Didier beat the keeper to make it an 8-5 game with 13:31 remaining.
- Aubrey Conners pushed the Clark edge to 9-5 with a goal off a feed from Simmons with 7:33 to go in the game and the Cougar defense held strong the remainder of the game as they came away with a 9-6 win over Mass. Maritime.
