Softball Splits Games on Tuesday from Gene Cusic Classic

NAPLES, Fla. – The Clark University softball team (2-4) split their two games today opening with a loss to Grove City and bouncing back with a 6-1 victory over Anna Maria on Tuesday from the North Collier Sports Complex.

Game One: Grove City 15, Clark 7

  • First-year Keira Langus took the bump for Clark in game one and threw a scoreless first before first-year Sydney Lyons scored in the top of the second to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
  • After Grove City responded with two runs in the bottom of the second, first-year Felicia Salvati roped a double to left center that scored junior Rebecca Mauro in the top of the third to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Grove City answered with runs in the bottom of the third and fourth, but the Cougars tallied five runs in the top of the fifth as first-year Ella Traynor singled to center, junior Samantha Crowley hit a two-RBI single, and a pinch hit two-RBI single through the left side to give Clark a 7-4 lead.
  • After Grove City tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, they scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to come away with a victory.
  • Crowley went 2-4 with a pair of RBI's and a stolen base.
  • Salvati was 3-4 with a double and an RBI.
  • Clark tallied 13 hits in the contest.

Game Two: Clark 6, Anna Maria 1

  • First-year Brooke Buzzeo pitched a scoreless first inning before Crowley was able to steal home after a throw to second in which Mauro beat as the Cougars took a 1-0 lead.
  • Buzzeo retired the side in the top of the second and third before first-year Erin Slavin singled to center field for Clark and reached second, but was left on base in the bottom of the third.
  • The Amcats got a runner on second in the top of the fourth, but Buzzeo was able to retire Romano with a flyout to left and Buzzeo set down Anna Maria in order in the top of the fifth.
  • Senior Allessia Mauro singled to shortstop to open the fifth and came around to score along with first-year Alyssa Briggs on a ball hit to left center by Crowley to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • Rebecca Mauro later singled to short, driving in Crowley, Salvati drove in a run with a single that drove in Slavin, and first-year Caitriona Andre drove in first-year Emelie Spence as the Cougars took a 6-0 lead.
  • Buzzeo got out of a jam on first and second in the top of the sixth before striking out the final Amcat in the top of the seventh to give Clark a 6-1 win.
  • Crowley went 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's.
  • Slavin was 2-4 with a run scored.
  • Buzzeo pitched 7.0 innings, struck out six batters, and allowed no earned runs.
