Men's Lacrosse Clinches Spot in NEWMAC Tournament With 13-7 Victory Against Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. – The Clark University men's lacrosse team (4-7, 3-2 NEWMAC) earned a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament with a 13-7 victory over Wheaton (5-9, 0-5 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon from Nordin Field.

How it Happened

  • Graduate student Ryan Mickelson opened the game with a pair of saves and after a Lyon goal, sophomore Matt Wells answered with a goal just over two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1 with 8:29 to go in the first.
  • Junior Patrick Liddy and senior John D'Eufemia scored the contest's next two goals, as graduate student Benjamin Hollerbach found Liddy for a man-up goal and gave Clark a 3-1 edge.
  • Mickelson opened the second quarter with another pair of saves before D'Eufemia netted his second goal of the contest to extend the lead to 4-1.
  • After Wheaton got one back, Hollerbach found graduate student Tommy McCarthy for a man-up goal to take a 5-2 lead into the half.
  • Junior Colin Howard opened the scoring in the third with a goal before Wells and sophomore Ryan Kerr each scored as Clark opened the third on a 3-0 run to take an 8-2 lead.
  • Junior Attilio LaVecchia added Clark's ninth goal of the game and Hollerbach netted a pair of goals with less than 13 seconds to go in the third as the graduate student scored, then fellow graduate student Mark Zito won the ensuing faceoff and found Hollerbach to make it 11-4.
  • Wells pushed the lead to 12-4 early in the fourth and Howard netted a man-up goal in the fourth off a feed from Hollerbach as Clark came away with a 13-7 win.
