BRISTOL, RI – The Clark University volleyball team (1-0) opened the 2023 season with a 3-1 victory over Regis (0-1), sparked by 12 kills from senior
Victoria Pastor on Friday afternoon from the Paolino Recreation Center.
Clark won 25-10 in the first set, fell 25-16 in the second set, won 25-17 in the third set, and in the final set won 25-18 to seal the victory.
How it Happened
- Clark jumped out to an early 7-3 lead sparked by kills from seniors Camille Flurry and Sofia Scherrer del Llano and pushed the advantage to 16-7 as Pastor recorded three consecutive kills in the middle of the set.
- The Cougars ended the set on an 8-0 run led by a pair of kills from senior Sheyenne Williams off assists from junior Yvanna Torres as Clark won the first set 25-10.
- Regis jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the second set before Williams recorded a kill from Torres to cut the deficit to four at 11-7.
- The Cougars dropped the set 25-16 despite kills from Torres and Williams as well as an ace from Scherrer del Llano in the set.
- With the third set tied at 6-6, the scarlet and white scored five unanswered points sparked by the first-year Winifred Gakidis' first career kill and fellow first-year Julia Dopazo's second career assist to take an 11-6 edge.
- Clark led 19-17 in the third set before the Cougars ended on a 6-0 run sparked by kills from Pastor and Flurry to take the set 25-17 and a 2-1 lead.
- In the fourth set, the Cougars trailed 5-4 before ripping off six straight points led by a service ace from Torres and kills from junior Camille Sterling and Scherrer del Llano.
- Clark then took a 20-14 edge in the set as Pastor, Sterling, Scherrer del Llano, Williams, and Flurry all registered kills.
- Flurry added two more kills over the team's final five points as Clark won 25-18 in the final set.
