Men's Soccer Scores in Each Half to Earn 2-0 Victory Over UNE

WORCESTER, Mass. - Clark men's soccer (2-3-2) played their first match of the week against UNE (1-5-2) in a non-conference affair and came away with a 2-0 win over the Nor'Easters on Wednesday night from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • Senior Teddy Donahue put Clark's first shot on target in the fourth minute, but had his shot saved by Sean McCarthy.
  • The Cougars offense continued to apply pressure on the UNE backline with two more shots on target from Donahue in the 15th and 17th minutes that we stopped.
  • Clark earned a pair of corners over the next 10 minutes before junior Colin Ruiz sent a ball into the box that found first-year Carter Benoff and Benoff was able to head the ball past the goalie to give the scarlet and white a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute.
  • Neither team put a shot on target over the final seven minutes of the half as the Cougars held UNE to only one shot in the first half and took a 1-0 edge into the half.
  • Junior Lucas Saia put a shot on target early in the second half that was saved by McCarthy and was able to earn the scarlet and white a corner kick.
  • In the 65th minute, first-year Charles Lopez sent a ball over to sophomore Luke Sheldon, and Sheldon touched the ball over to Ruiz, who buried the ball into the back of the net to put Clark up 2-0.
  • Sophomore Diego Marin made his first save of the match in the 71st minute off a shot from Matt Calver, which went down as the final shot on target as Clark held UNE to a shutout to win 2-0.
Inside the Box Score
  • Clark attempted 28 shots, with seven on target and earned 12 corner kicks.
  • Benoff's goal was his second of the season and first game-winning goal.
  • Ruiz's assist went down as his first of the year and his goal was also his first of the 2023 campaign.
  • Lopez's helper was his third of the year and Sheldon's assist was his first of the season.
