SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Clark University volleyball team (8-5, 1-2 NEWMAC) traveled to Springfield (14-1, 3-0 NEWMAC) for a conference match on Tuesday night and fell 3-0 to the Pride from Blake Arena.
The Cougars fell 25-16 in the first set, were edged 29-27 in the second set, and dropped the third set 25-20.
How it Happened
- Clark jumped out to an early 4-0 lead sparked by a kill from senior Victoria Pastor and a later kill by first-year Harper Chinn off a feed from first-year Julia Dopazo gave the Cougars a 6-5 edge.
- Pastor and junior Camille Sterling combined for a block to give Clark an 8-7 advantage, but the Pride went on an 11-2 run to take a 18-10 lead.
- Pastor and Scherrer del Llano recorded kills and blocks from senior Sheyenne Williams, Chinn, and senior Camille Flurry made it a 20-14 set.
- Williams registered a kill and a block from Flurry and Sterling were the final two Clark points of the set as Springfield took the first set 25-16.
- Down 9-3 early in the second set, Clark rattled off six unanswered points as Chinn recorded three service aces, Williams added two more kills, and Sterling and Pastor combined for another block to tie the second set at 9-9.
- The next eight points were traded by the two teams and after three unanswered Pride points, Dopazo found Williams for a kill to make it a 16-14 lead for Springfield.
- Junior Yvanna Torres found Chinn and Sterling to give Clark a 19-18 edge and after trading the lead, Pastor recorded a kill to make it a 23-22 game in the Cougars favor.
- Williams, Flurry, and Sterling each recorded kills over the rest of the set, but the Pride came away with a 29-27 win in the second set.
- Clark opened the third set on a 5-2 run sparked by two Flurry kills and extended the lead to 10-7 later in the set as Dopazo found Flurry for a kill.
- Chinn recorded a kill and a block from Williams gave Clark a 15-13 edge and after the Pride took a one-point lead, Flurry registered a kill and a pair of Springfield attack errors gave the Cougars a 19-17 advantage.
- The Pride ended the match on an 8-1 run to come away with a 25-20 set win.
