Wellesley, Mass. - The Clark women's basketball team (10-4, 1-0 NEWMAC) opened conference play with a 66-61 victory over Wellesley (7-6, 0-1 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon from the Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.
How it HappenedÂ
? Both defenses controlled the pace of play early as neither team scored over the first three minutes of play before first-year Kailey Rios hit a triple and a layup from senior Alaina Schatzabel gave Clark a 5-4 lead.Â
? Senior Jacqueline Faulise scored the Cougars and Rios hit another three-pointer, but the Blue held a 13-11 edge after one quarter of play.
? Rios gave Clark the lead early in the second quarter and first-year Catherine Antwi made a bucket to extend the lead to 16-13 with 7:13 to go in the second quarter.
? After the Blue captured the lead, graduate student Sarah Zambrano and Faulise scored the next four points to give Clark the edge back and junior Kumi Tamura hit a three before the half as the Cougars led 27-25 at the half.
? Zambrano scored four of Clark's first six points of the third quarter to push the lead to six at 33-27 and a made triple from Rios extended the lead to 36-27.
? Wellesley got back within five before Tamura hit a jumper and junior Megan Swedberg made a layup as Clark held a 40-36 edge.
? Senior Alexis Ross, Faulise, and Antwi each scored before the end of the quarter as the two teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 46-46.
? Rios hit a three-pointer to give the Cougars a lead with 6:01 remaining to go up 54-53 and a jumper from first-year Emma Drefs gave Clark a 56-54 lead.
? The Blue tied the game at 56-56 with 4:20 to go and the contest remained tied for the next two minutes before Tamura hit a three-pointer to go up 59-56.
? Rios hit another triple to make it a 62-58 contest and after the Blue pulled back within one at 62-61 before Tamura hit four free throws down the stretch as Clark came away with a 66-61 win.

? The Cougars pulled down 46 rebounds, dished out 11 assists, forced 16 turnovers, and shot 37.9 percent from the floor.
? Rios scored 24 points and hit eight three-pointers.
