WALTHAM, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (8-4) opened the 2024 portion of their schedule with a fourth quarter come from behind 84-72 victory over Brandeis (4-7) led by a career-high 28 points from first-year
Kailey Rios on Tuesday night from Red Auerbach Arena.
How it Happened
- The Cougars and Judges played to an early 5-5 tie as first-year Olivia Shipley and Rios combined five points before Brandeis scored the games next nine points.
- Rios scored Clark's next eight points and a made layup from senior Alexis Ross pulled the Cougars within two at 17-15 with 3:16 remaining.
- Ross and Rios each scored before the end of the period as the scarlet and white trailed 20-19 and a jumper early in the second to tie the game at 21-21.
- Rios made a jumper to give Clark the edge at 23-22 and five unanswered within the next few minutes as the Cougars held a 30-28 advantage with 3:47 to go in the second.
- Junior Kumi Tamura netted the Cougars final four points of the half as the team's entered the locker room tied at 34-34.
- The teams traded baskets over the first three minutes of the third quarter as Rios, graduate student Sarah Zambrano, Shipley, and senior Jacqueline Faulise all scored as the game remained tied at 43-43.
- First-year Emma Drefs made a layup to give the Cougars the lead and a triple from Faulise off a feed from first-year Catherine Antwi made it a 51-50 contest.
- The Judges ended the quarter on an 8-4 run despite buckets from Ross and Shipley as Brandeis took a 58-54 lead into the fourth.
- Faulise scored Clark's first five points to give the Cougars a 59-58 lead and an 8-0 run as Rios and Antwi each hit three-pointers to push the lead to 67-60 with 5:03 remaining.
- The Judges cut the deficit to three before Shipley and Antwi combined to score seven points as the scarlet and white held a 75-67 edge with 1:13 to play and a pair of junior Megan Swedberg free throws pushed the lead to 10 at 77-67.
- Faulise hit four free throws down the stretch to help guide the Cougars to an 84-72 victory.
