WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (14-5, 4-1 NEWMAC) closed out their two-game homestand with a contest against Emerson (11-8. 2-3 NEWMAC) and came away with a down-to-the-wire 62-60 win over the Lions on Saturday afternoon from the Kneller Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- The Cougars jumped out to an early 8-2 lead as first-year Kailey Rios scored four points and Clark also got points from senior Alaina Schatzabel and first-year Olivia Shipley.
- Rios and junior Kumi Tamura each hit three-pointers before the end of the first quarter and a made layup from Schatzabel helped the Cougars take a 16-11 edge into the second quarter.
- Junior Megan Swedberg and first-year Catherine Antwi combined to score the first four points of the second quarter to extend the lead to 20-11 and a senior Jacqueline Faulise layup gave the scarlet and white a 22-13 advantage with 6:33 remaining in the period.
- Antwi and senior Alexis Ross combined to score Clark's final seven points of the first half as the scarlet and white took a 29-20 lead into the half.
- Rios and Antwi netted the Cougars next six points as Clark possessed a 35-24 edge and a jumper from graduate student Sarah Zambrano extended the advantage to 37-24 with 5:17 to go in the third quarter.
- After three Emerson points, Ross hit a jumper and a made three-pointer from Antwi gave Clark a 42-27 lead with 2:56 remaining in the third.
- Tamura hit a triple and a pair of Antwi free throws helped the scarlet and white take a 47-38 edge into the fourth quarter.
- Rios connected on another three-pointer to open the fourth off a feed from Faulise before the Lions cut the deficit to seven off a made layup from Charlotte Levison.
- Rios then hit consecutive three-pointers to push Clark's advantage to 56-43 with 6:02 remaining in the game before Emerson scored five unanswered to get within eight.
- Faulise and Rios combined for the Cougars next four points to go up 60-50 with 4:37 to play and a Ross layup gave Clark a 62-53 edge with 2:41 remaining in the contest.
- Emerson rattled off seven unanswered to get within two at 62-60, but Clark's defense prevailed as the Cougars forced a missed jumper and a turnover on the Lions final two possessions to come away with a 62-60 victory.
