WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University volleyball team (11-7, 4-2 NEWMAC) welcomed Emerson (9-11, 2-4 NEWMAC) to the Kneller on Thursday night and rallied from being down 2-1 to come away with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Lions.
The Cougars fell 25-16 in the first set, took the second set 25-14, dropped the third set 26-24, won the fourth set 25-22, and clinched the deciding set 15-12.
How it Happened
- The scarlet and white jumped out to an early 8-4 lead as senior Yvanna Torres recorded a service ace, graduate student Victoria Pastor tallied three kills, and graduate student Camille Flurry registered a kill off a feed from sophomore Julia Dopazo.
- After graduate student Sofia Scherrer del Llano, Flurry, and first-year Isabella Alcott all recorded kills in the middle of the set to pull Clark within two at 18-16, but allowed seven unanswered to end the set as the Lions won the first set 25-16.
- Clark jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the second set sparked by kills from senior Camille Sterling, Pastor, and Alcott as well as a combined block from Pastor and sophomore Winifred Gakidis.
- Tied at 11-11, the Cougars responded with seven unanswered points as sophomore Harper Chinn served as Scherrer del Llano, Flurry, and Pastor all registered kills to put Clark up 18-11.
- Scherrer del Llano, Alcott, and Pastor all tallied kills to close the set and a junior Yumeng Liu service ace ended the set as Clark won 25-14.
- The two teams traded points early in the third set in an 8-8 ball game as Sterling, Scherrer del Llano, Pastor, and Flurry as well as blocks from Sterling, Pastor, and Alcott.
- Chinn and Torres each recorded service aces in the middle of the set and Pastor, senior Emily Newman, Scherrer del Llano, and Alcott all scored as Clark led 17-14.
- Blocks from Flurry and Newman as well as kills from Flurry, Dopazo, and Alcott gave the Cougars a 24-22 edge before Emerson rallied with four straight points.
- Torres helped guide the Cougars to a 7-0 lead in the fourth set with three service aces and a kill from Scherrer del Llano.
- Alcott and Sterling combined for a block and two kills from both Pastor and Sterling helped Clark take a 15-12 edge and a service ace later in the set extended the lead to 18-13.
- After the teams were tied 21-21, Newman, Alcott, and Pastor all recorded kills to round out the set as the Cougars won the set 25-22 to force a deciding fifth set.
- Emerson jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the fifth set despite a Sterling kill and rallied to tie the set at 4-4 with a kill from Pastor.
- Pastor, Flurry, and Scherrer del Llano all recorded kills over the remainder of the set and blocks from Newman, Flurry, and Alcott helped the Cougars come away with a 15-12 win.
Inside the Stats
- Clark recorded 68 kills, eight aces, nine blocks, 49 assists, and 77 digs.
- Pastor led the team with 18 kills and added 16 digs.
- Alcott added nine kills and three block assists.
- Flurry led the squad with five blocks and tallied eight kills.
- Torres (28) and Dopazo (18) led the team in assists.
- Scherrer del Llano (24) and Liu (14) also reached double figures in digs.
