Volleyball Hands Babson First NEWMAC Loss With Convincing 3-2 Victory

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University volleyball team (12-8, 5-3 NEWMAC) handed Babson (20-2, 7-1 NEWMAC) their first NEWMAC loss and snapped a 16-game winning streak with a thrilling 3-2 win over the Beavers on Tuesday night from the Kneller Gymnasium.

The Cougars took the first set 25-20, won the second set 25-22, fell 25-18 in the third, were edged 25-23, and rallied to win the final set 15-10.
How it Happened
  • The teams played to an early 8-8 tie in the first set as senior Camille Sterling and graduate student Victoria Pastor as well as a service ace from sophomore Julia Dopazo.
  • Down 9-8, Clark rallied for four straight points as Pastor recorded three consecutive service aces to go up 12-9 and later in the set Pastor tallied a kill off a feed from senior Yvanna Torres helped give the Cougars a 17-13 edge.
  • After the Beavers tied the set up at 19-19, the Cougars ended the set on a 6-1 run as first-year Isabella Alcott registered a kill, Dopazo tallied a pair of service aces, and a double block from senior Emily Newman and graduate Camille Flurry gave Clark a 25-20 win in the first set.
  • The Cougars jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the second set as Sterling, graduate student Sofia Scherrer del Llano, Torres, Alcott, and Flurry and a duo block from Flurry and Scherrer del Llano.
  • Clark rattled off three straight points in the middle of the set as Pastor and Flurry recorded kills and another Dopazo service ace extended the lead to 18-13.
  • Pastor, Scherrer del Llano, Newman, and Alcott all tallied kills and sophomore Harper Chinn recorded a service ace in the second set as the Cougars took the set 25-22.
  • Babson jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the third set before Pastor and Dopazo each scored points to help Clark make it a 9-7 set.
  • Chinn tallied another service ace and Scherrer del Llano recorded a pair of kills in the middle of the set as well as more kills from Pastor and Flurry helped pull Clark within three at 19-16 with kills.
  • After dropping the third set, the Cougars jumped out to an 8-6 lead as Pastor recorded three kills and Alcott tallied a kill and a Sterling kill later in the set tied the match at 10-10.
  • Flurry registered a kill and a block in the middle of the set before kills from Newman and Scherrer del Llano extended the Clark lead to 18-17 and after getting down 21-19, the Beavers rallied to win the set 25-23.
  • Clark won the first part of the deciding set 8-5 as Scherrer del Llano recorded two kills, Flurry added one, and Pastor tallied three kills.
  • Sterling and Scherrer del Llano combined for a block and kills from Pastor and Alcott helped the scarlet and white come away with a thrilling 15-10 win in the final set.
Inside the Stats
  • Clark recorded 58 kills, 12 aces, eight blocks, 51 assists, and 65 digs.
  • Pastor registered a career-high 26 kills and added 14 digs.
  • Scherrer del Llano also added 10 kills and three blocks.
  • Dopazo led the way with six aces and recorded 15 assists.
  • Torres recorded a team-leading 32 assists.
  • Flurry and Sterling each tallied four blocks.
  • Liu led the team with 16 digs.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will return to the court on Friday night when they travel to Trinity for a non-conference match against the Bantams beginning at 6:00 p.m.
