Volleyball Rallies to Thrilling 3-2 Victory Over Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. – The Clark University volleyball team (9-7, 3-2 NEWMAC) stormed back after trailing by two sets as the Cougars came away with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Wheaton (6-12, 0-5 NEWMAC) on Tuesday night from Emerson Gymnasium.

The Cougars dropped the first set 25-23, fell 25-20 in the second set, took the third set 25-23, topped the Lyons 26-24 in the fourth set, and won the deciding set 15-11.

How it Happened
  • Clark jumped out to an early 10-7 sparked by kills from graduate student Victoria Pastor, first-year Isabella Alcott, graduate student Sofia Scherrer del Llano, and graduate student Camille Flurry as well as a combined block from sophomore Winifred Gakidis and Flurry.
  • A service ace and kill from Scherrer del Llano helped extend the lead to 14-8 and after the Lyons tied the set at 16-16, Clark won the next two points to five the Cougars an 18-16 edge.
  • Tied at 20-20, the Lyons won five of the next eight points despite a kill from Scherrer del Llano to take the first set 25-23.
  • Wheaton held an early 7-3 advantage in the third set, with senior Camille Sterling recording a block before kills from Pastor and Flurry helped the Cougars rally to pull back within two at 9-7.
  • Pastor collected four kills off feeds from both senior Yvanna Torres and sophomore Julia Dopazo and a kill from Sterling made it a 21-17 set in favor of Wheaton before the home team scored four of the final six points as the Lyons won the second set 25-20.
  • The teams traded leads three times early in the third set as Clark took an 8-6 advantage sparked by a Torres service ace and kills from Alcott and Pastor.
  • Flurry, Scherrer del Llano, Pastor, and senior Emily Newman all registered kills in the middle of the set as the Cougars led 17-15.
  • Sterling and Pastor each tallied a pair of kills, with Pastor closing out the set off a feed from Torres as Clark took the back-and-forth third set 25-23.
  • Wheaton jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the fourth set despite a pair of kills from Scherrer del Llano and a kill from Sterling before three straight Pastor kills tied the set at 8-8.
  • Clark rallied to take a 13-10 edge as Flurry recorded two kills and a kill from Sterling off a pass from Torres later in the set helped keep the lead at three at 17-14.
  • Wheaton rallied with three straight points before the team's traded points as Scherrer del Llano, Sterling, and Pastor each recorded kills and a service ace from Torres gave Clark a 24-23 lead.
  • Tied 24-24, Scherrer del Llano and Pastor tallied kills for the final two points of the set as Clark forced a fifth set with a 26-24 victory.
  • The Cougars jumped out to an early 8-3 lead before the team's switched sides as Scherrer del Llano, Sterling, Alcott, and Pastor all registered kills from Torres.
  • Pastor, Flurry, and Torres helped tame the Lyons with points down the stretch as Clark came away with a 15-11 win.

  • Clark recorded 58 kills, 54 assists, seven service aces, seven blocks, and 67 digs.
  • Pastor registered a career-high 24 kills and added nine digs.
  • Scherrer del Llano matched a career-high with 13 kills while registering eight digs.
  • Flurry led the team with three blocks and recorded seven kills.
  • Torres (28) and Dopazo (21) combined for 49 assists.
  • Liu recorded 23 digs and added five assists.
What's Next
The Cougars will be back in action on Thursday night when they welcome Worcester State to the Kneller for their pride game beginning at 7:00 p.m.
