Summers Nets Equalizer Late in 1-1 Draw Against Salem State

WORCESTER, Mass. - Clark men's soccer (4-4-4) welcomed Salem State (5-3-4) to Granger for a midweek non-conference clash on Wednesday afternoon and first-year Graham Summers scored the equalizer in the 80th minute as the teams played to a 1-1 draw from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • The Vikings jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal off the foot of Michael Echavarria on a free kick in the fifth minute.
  • Senior William Lopez and sophomore Carter Benoff each serviced in corners early in the first half and in the 15th minute, junior Diego Marin recorded his first save of the match off a shot from Matheus Pelissari.
  • Lopez nearly tied the match in the 35th minute with a shot on goal that was stopped by Brady Whitmarsh as Salem State took a 1-0 lead into the second half.
  • Marin stopped a shot early in the second half and the Cougars recorded a pair of early corner kicks that were cleared by the Vikings before junior Ben Siegel put a shot on target for the scarlet and white that was saved.
  • Siegel had two more shots stopped in the 53rd minute and 64th minutes before Marin recorded his third save of the afternoon in the 67th minute.
  • Sophomore Nico Carrillo sent a ball down the field in the 80th minute that Summers headed and advanced before the first-year was able to get around Whitmarsh and find the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.
  • Summers nearly gave Clark the lead in the 85th minute with a header that was saved by defenseman James Meli and Siegel created the Cougars final chance in the 87th minute off a corner with a header that went just wide of the goal as the team's drew 1-1.

  • Clark attempted 19 shots, with six going on target and earned eight corner kicks.
  • Summers goal was his second of the season and marked the second consecutive game he's scored in.
  • Marin recorded three saves.
