Men's Basketball Battles at St. Joe's (Conn.), Falls 67-65 at Buzzer

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Clark University men's basketball team (1-1) traveled to St. Joseph's Conn. (1-0) for their first road match of the season and were edged 67-65 by the Blue Jays on Wednesday night from the James A. Calhoun Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • After trailing 5-0 to open the game, Clark responded with 11 unanswered points sparked by six points from senior Kekoa McArdle, a triple from junior Reid Neumann, and a made layup from senior Bruce Saintilus.
  • Saintilus and graduate student Jordan Richard netted Clark's next four points as the game was tied at 15-15, but the Blue Jays then scored seven unanswered to take a 22-15 lead with 9:27 to play in the first half.
  • The Cougars pulled back to within one as four different players scored, including a pair of free throws from senior Ian Calabrese with 5:34 to go in the half as Clark trailed 24-23.
  • Sophomores Malik Matanmi and Quentin Pridgen as well as Neumann all scored over the next two minutes to tie the game at 29-29 and after allowing four straight points, the Cougars ended the half with five unanswered as McArdle and Saintilus each scored as Clark led 34-33.
  • McArdle scored four of Clark's first six points of the second half as the Cougars led by six at 40-34 and a layup from sophomore Christopher Clarke helped the scarlet and white gain a 42-35 edge with 15:47 remaining.
  • Neumann connected on a triple with 10:59 to play to extend the lead to 50-42 before McArdle made a pair of layups as Clark possessed a 54-46 advantage.
  • St. Joe's pulled back within one at 54-53 before a layup from McArdle pushed the lead back to three at 56-53 with 4:59 remaining.
  • Pridgen scored Clark's next five points with a made three-pointer and layup to extend their advantage to as many as seven at 61-54 with 3:09 to play.
  • The Blue Jays responded with 10 unanswered points sparked by six points from Tyshawn Jackson before Saintilus was able to tie the game with 0:15 remaining with a made layup.
  • Jackson had the ball tipped away by Pridgen with five seconds to play, recovered, drove to the hoop, and made a tough contested jumper at the buzzer as Clark fell 67-65.

  • The Cougars grabbed 40 rebounds and recorded eight steals.
  • McArdle led the team with 20 points, shot 9-14, and pulled down seven rebounds.
  • Saintilus added 15 points, made seven shots, and grabbed seven rebounds.
  • Pridgen nearly tallied a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Cougars will return to the court on Monday night when they travel to Nichols for a non-conference contest beginning at 7:30 p.m.
