Women's Basketball Suffers First Loss of Season at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Clark women's basketball team (6-1) competed in their final game before Thanksgiving break on Tuesday night at Wesleyan (3-2) and were tied heading into the fourth before falling 69-64 from the Silloway Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • Wesleyan jumped out to an early 11-2 lead despite a made layup from sophomore Kailey Rios before Clark rattled off five unanswered points as graduate student Alaina Schatzabel converted an and-one and Rios made a jump as the Cougars trailed 11-7.
  • After Wesleyan pushed the lead back to nine at 18-9, sophomore Catherine Antwi made a three-pointer and Rios connected on a jumper as Clark pulled back within four at 18-14 before first-year Juliette Tarsa and Rios each scored as the Cardinals took a 24-18 lead heading into the second quarter.
  • The Cougars scored four points to open the second quarter as Schatzabel and first-year Cyriah Coleman each scored to get back within two before Wesleyan rattled off seven straight points.
  • Sophomore Olivia Shipley netted Clark's next four points and five unanswered from Rios helped the Cougars answer to get back within two, but the Cardinals scored the final five points of the quarter as Wesleyan led 38-31 at the break.
  • Schatzabel and graduate student Jacqueline Faulise scored the Cougars first four points of the second half before a made three-pointer from first-year Alysaa Bordonaro pulled Clark within six at 44-38 with 7:05 remaining.
  • Trailing by eight, sophomore Emma Drefs and Shipley netted the next five points of the game to get back within three at 46-43.
  • Antwi and Rios combined to score Clark's final points of the quarter as the Cougars rallied back to tie the game at 50-50 entering the fourth.
  • Rios, Antwi, and Schatzabel all scored to keep trading points with the Cardinals early in the fourth before nine unanswered from Wesleyan gave them a 65-56 edge with 3:07 to play.
  • Clark responded with an 8-0 run of their own as Tarsa, Coleman, and Rios all found the scoresheet to pull the Cougars within one at 65-64, but Wesleyan held Clark scoreless over the final 1:28 of play and hit four free throws down the stretch.
Inside the Box Score
  • Clark grabbed 37 rebounds, dished out 12 assists, registered 13 steals, and forced 24 turnovers.
  • Rios led the team with 19 points, while adding four steals and three assists.
  • Antwi added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
  • Schatzabel also reached double-figures with 10 points and five rebounds.
What's Next
The Cougars will play their first of a two-game road trip in California when they travel to Claremont-Mudd Scripps for a contest on Friday night beginning at 5:00 p.m.
