Strong Third Quarter Pushes Women's Basketball Past Salve Regina

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (15-8, 5-4 NEWMAC) hosted Salve Regina (10-13, 4-5 NEWMAC) for the first time since the Seahawks joined the conference and the Cougars came away with a come-from-behind 86-82 victory on Saturday afternoon from the Kneller Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • The Cougars jumped out to an early 8-1 lead sparked by four points from senior Alaina Schatzabel as well as buckets from first-year Emma Drefs and senior Jacqueline Faulise.
  • After the Seahawks got back within two, Schatzabel converted an and-one layup to put Clark up 15-10 with 4:34 to play in the first.
  • Junior Kumi Tamura hit a three-pointer before the end of the first, but Salve Regina ended the period on a 12-3 run as the Seahawks took a 22-18 lead into the second quarter.
  • Rios and Schatzabel combined for the first five points of the second to give Clark the lead back at 23-22 before triples from Drefs and Rios made it a 30-29 game in favor of the visitors with 5:52 remaining.
  • Salve Regina scored the next six points before Schatzabel and Rios scored the contests next four points and a jumper from Drefs before the half as the Seahawks took a 39-35 lead into the locker room.
  • Faulise hit a three right out of the half to pull Clark within one, but the Seahawks pushed the lead to as many as six before first-year Catherine Antwi connected on a triple as the Cougars trailed 46-43.
  • Down by five with 4:19 left in the third, Clark ended the third quarter on a 16-5 run sparked by six points from Antwi, four from Shipley, and triples from both Rios and Tamura at the buzzer as the Cougars took a 62-56 lead into the fourth.
  • The Seahawks scored the first four points of the fourth before four points from Schatzabel and a made three-pointer from Faulise off a feed from junior Megan Swedberg gave Clark a 70-64 advantage with 6:17 to play.
  • Salve Regina scored four unanswered to get within two before a pair of Faulise made a pair of free throws and after the Seahawks tied the game at 72-72, the Cougars scored nine unanswered points as Schatzabel led the way with four points and two from both Rios and Faulise gave Clark an 81-72 lead with 0:47 remaining.
  • The Seahawks got as close as four over the final 0:47 of the game, but made free throws from Faulise and Rios helped the Cougars come away with a thrilling 86-82 win over Salve Regina.
Inside the Box Score
  • Clark grabbed 40 rebounds, dished out 20 assists, registered 11 steals, and forced 21 turnovers.
  • Schatzabel led the team by recording a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Faulise added 18 points and made eight free throws, while adding nine rebounds.
  • Rios netted 18 points and hit three three-pointers.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will be back in action on Wednesday night with their final road game of the regular season with a contest at Springfield beginning at 7:00 p.m.
