SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (15-9, 5-5 NEWMAC) traveled to Springfield (20-4, 9-1 NEWMAC) for their final road game of the year and fell 107-77 to the Pride on Wednesday night from Blake Arena.
Despite the loss, with the losses of Emerson and Salve Regina, the scarlet and white have clinched a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament.
How it Happened
- The Cougars fell behind 12-7 early despite four points from first-year Kailey Rios and a made three-pointer from fellow first-year Emma Drefs and a made triple from Rios with 4:36 remaining in the first made it a 15-12 lead for the Pride.
- Junior Kumi Tamura, senior Alexis Ross, and Rios combined to go on an 8-0 run as Clark took a 20-17 advantage and five more points from Rios before the end of the quarter as the Cougars led 25-23 at the end of the period.
- Springfield opened the second quarter on a 12-2 run before a three-pointer from graduate student Sarah Zambrano cut the deficit down to seven at 37-30 with 6:32 to go in the first half.
- Senior Alaina Schatzabel, Tamura, and senior Jacqueline Faulise combined for Clark's final 11 points of the half, but a made triple from Natalie Lucas gave the Pride a 57-41 lead heading into the locker room.
- Springfield opened the second half on a 10-3 run, but eight unanswered points from Faulise and Rios helped the Cougars get within 15 at 67-52 with 4:40 to play in the third quarter.
- Rios scored seven of Clark's next nine points as the Cougars stayed within striking distance, trailing 77-61 entering the fourth quarter.
- First-year Catherine Antwi scored Clark's first three points of the fourth to get as close as 14, but the Pride ran away with the game despite points down the stretch from Ross, graduate student Simone Fiore, and sophomore Sam Golden as the Pride won 107-77.
