Men's Lacrosse Tops Mass. Maritime 15-13 in Home Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University men's lacrosse team (2-1) welcomed Mass. Maritime (1-1) to Granger for their home-opener and came away with a 15-13 win over the Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
  • After Mass. Maritime jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, senior Attilio LaVecchia found fellow senior Colin Howard for a goal to tie the game up at 1-1 with 10:11 to go in the first quarter.
  • The Bucs scored the second goal of the contest and Howard again answered off a pass from first-year Tate Gorman before Mass. Maritime added two more goals before the end of the first as they took a 4-2 lead.
  • Junior Matt Wells and senior Matthew Minkwitz scored a pair of goals to tie the game up at 4-4 and after a Mass. Maritime goal, Minkwitz and junior Mason Kaufmann each scored to give the Cougars a 6-5 lead with 4:52 to go in the first half.
  • Howard scored Clark's final goal of the second quarter with 1:48 to go as the Cougars and Bucs entered the locker room tied at 7-7.
  • Graduate student Dylan Harloff recorded a save early in the third quarter as Clark also netted three unanswered goals as senior Patrick Liddy, Wells, and Kaufmann each scored as the Cougars took a 10-7 lead with 10:24 remaining in the third.
  • After a Mass. Maritime goal and save from Harloff, Wells and first-year Luke Nufer each netted goals as the scarlet and white entered the fourth quarter with a 12-9 lead.
  • Harloff opened the fourth quarter with a save and a man-up goal from Minkwitz off a feed from LaVechhia gave the Cougars a 13-10 advantage.
  • Wells and graduate student Zachary Conant off a pass from sophomore Brett Newman gave Clark a 15-10 lead and despite three Bucs goals in the fourth, the Cougars came away with a 15-13 home victory.

  • Clark attempted 35 shots, scooped up 28 ground balls, won 15 faceoffs, and forced 22 turnovers.
  • Wells led the way with four goals and an assist.
  • Minkwitz and Howard each added three goals and an assist.
  • Kaufmann scored two goals and caused two turnovers.
  • Sophomore Sean Braunwart registered a pair of assists.
  • Harloff tallied 11 saves.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to the field on Wednesday when they close out their two-game homestand against UMass Boston beginning at 7:00 p.m. from Granger.
