WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (14-8, 4-4 NEWMAC) welcomed Coast Guard (16-6, 5-3 NEWMAC) to the Kneller for their first home game of the week and fell 82-68 to the Bears on Wednesday night from the Kneller Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- The two teams played to an early 9-9 tie led by four points from first-year Kailey Rios as well as points from senior Alaina Schatzabel, graduate student Sarah Zambrano, and junior Megan Swedberg.
- Junior Kumi Tamura hit a three-pointer and a triple from first-year Catherine Antwi gave the Cougars a 15-14 edge with 0:51 to go in the first and another bucket from Antwi helped the game stay tied at 17-17.
- Rios opened the second quarter with a made three-pointer off a feed from Antwi to make it a 22-20 contest in favor of the Bears and a made layup from senior Jacqueline Faulise cut the deficit to three at 28-25 with 5:53 remaining.
- The teams then traded points over the next four minutes as Faulise hit a three-pointer and a made layup from senior Alexis Ross kept the deficit at three at 33-30 with 1:21 left in the half.
- Ross scored Clark's final four points of the half as the Bears took a 36-34 lead into the locker room.
- Faulise tied the game with a layup out of the half, but the Bears went on a 9-4 run despite buckets from Faulise and Antwi as Coast Guard held a 45-40 edge with 6:53 left in the third.
- Rios and first-year Olivia Shipley scored Clark's next four points, but Coast Guard pushed the lead to 15 late in the third before Rios, Zambrano, and Faulise scored as the Cougars trailed 63-53 entering the fourth quarter.
- Faulise and Rios scored Clark's first five points of the fourth to get back within eight at 66-58, but the Bears responded with a 12-2 run with the Cougar bucket coming from Schatzabel as Coast Guard led 78-60 with 3:27 to play.
- Schatzabel and Faulise combined for six unanswered and a bucket from Antwi with 0:12 to go was the Cougars final bucket as they fell 82-68.
