Romain Nets Two Fourth Quarter Goals to Push Field Hockey Past UMass Dartmouth

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Graduate student Rachael Romain netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter as the Cougars (4-1) extended their winning streak to three games with a 5-3 road victory over UMass Dartmouth (3-4) on Saturday afternoon from Cressy Field.  

How it Happened
  • Sophomore Rachel Reiter recorded an early save off a chance created by Kayla Crai before the Corsairs jumped out to an 1-0 lead in the third minute off a shot from Sophia Bouffard.
  • Junior Morgan Brown put Clark's first shot of the game on target in the seventh minute, but was denied by Shane Cueman and shortly after another Reiter save, UMass Dartmouth extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal from Brooke Lydon.
  • Clark's cut the deficit to one in the 17th minute when Romain found junior Jenna Beauchain off a penalty corner set and Beauchain found the back of the cage to make it a 2-1 contest.
  • In the 22nd minute, Beauchain registered a defensive save and in the final minute of the half, Clark earned a pair penalty corners that were denied by the Corsairs as UMass Dartmouth led 2-1 at the break.
  • The scarlet and white tied the game at 2-2 in the 36th minute as junior Elizabeth Cacciapaglia received a pass from Beauchain off a penalty corner and sent the ball over to junior Ciaran Cubbage who found the back of the cage.
  • Clark took a 3-2 lead 0:36 after Cubbage's game-tying goal as Cubbage scored again off a feed from junior Alison Kopec.
  • Reiter stopped two shots in the middle of the third quarter before Kenzie Bliven tied the game in the 44th minute as the two teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 3-3.
  • In the 51st minute of play, Beauchain sent a ball to Romain off a penalty corner and Romain found the back of the cage to give Clark their second lead of the afternoon at 4-3.
  • Romain scored her second goal of the fourth period with less than five minutes to play as Beauchain sent a corner over to senior Becca Murphy and Murphy found Romain as Clark held a 5-3 edge.
  • Graduate student Greer McCarty and Kopec nearly added to the lead with less than two minutes to play and Reiter stopped a shot with less than a minute remaining as the Cougars came away with a 5-3 victory.

  • Clark attempted 13 shots (eight on target) and earned 11 penalty corners.
  • The Cougars scored 80 percent of their goals off sets from penalty corners.
  • Beauchain's goal was her fourth of the season and career, while adding her first helper of the year and third as a Cougar.
  • Cubbage recorded her second consecutive multi-goal game in a row and now has five goals this year and 14 in her career.
  • Cacciapaglia tallied her third assist of the season and fifth in the scarlet and white.
  • Kopec's helper was her third of the campaign and seventh as a Cougar.

The Cougars will return home for a pair of games within 24 hours beginning on Friday, September 20 with a contest against Simmons beginning at 7:00 p.m.
