McCarty Nets Game-Winner as Clark Tops Fitchburg State in Double OT

WORCESTER, Mass. – Graduate student Greer McCarty recorded the game-winning goal in the 77th minute after battling for two overtimes as Clark (2-1) came away with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Fitchburg State (0-3) on Saturday afternoon from Granger Field.  

How it Happened
  • Sophomore Rachel Reiter opened the game with three early saves to keep the contest tied and junior Elizabeth Cacciapaglia had a shot saved in the quarter in a 0-0 game.
  • McCarty applied pressure on the Falcon defense early in the second quarter with a pair of shots on goal that were stopped by Jenna Morse and right before the half, junior Morgan Brown had a shot saved as both defenses forced first half shutouts.
  • The Cougar offense saw shots on goal from McCarty, a pair from junior Ciaran Cubbage, and Brown each have shots stopped within the first six minutes of the third.
  • Clark earned a penalty corner in the 44th minute as junior Jenna Beauchain sent a ball in that found the stick of graduate student Rachael Romain and Romain had her shot saved as neither team scored three quarters in.
  • In the middle of the fourth quarter, Clark played three players down, but were able to keep the Falcons to just one shot on goal, with Reiter registering a stop in the 56th minute as the team's entered overtime.
  • In the first overtime, the Cougars offense peppered Morse with shots from junior Alison Kopec, Romain, Beauchain, McCarty, and Brown that were all stopped as the game went to double overtime.
  • After a save from Reiter and a shot on goal from Cubbage, McCarty collected the rebound and put the ball in the back of the cage as the Cougars came away with a 1-0 win.

  • Clark attempted 37 shots (23 on target) and earned 16 penalty corners.
  • McCarty's goal was her second of the season, 19th of her career, and fourth career game-winner.
  • Reiter registered her first career shutout and stopped a career-high eight shots.
  • Brown led the team with seven shots on goal.

The Cougars will close out a three-game homestand on Tuesday night when they welcome Gordon to Granger for a match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
