WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (8-7, 0-1 NEWMAC) welcomed Wellesley (6-8, 1-0 NEWMAC) to the Kneller for their first NEWMAC game of the season and fell 72-60 to the Blue on Saturday afternoon.
How it Happened
- Sophomore Emma Drefs and graduate student Alaina Schatzabel combined to score Clark's first six points of the contest and a triple from sophomore Catherine Antwi before the end of the quarter made it a 15-9 game.
- Clark opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run sparked by three-pointers from first-year Cyriah Coleman and Antwi as well as a jumper from sophomore Olivia Shipley to tie the game at 17-17.
- After Wellesley scored six straight, Antwi connected on three free throws and a triple from first-year Juliette Tarsa before the half made it a 30-23 game in favor of the visitors.
- The Blue pushed their lead to 11 early in the third quarter before the Cougars scored six unanswered as Schatzabel, Coleman, and Drefs to cut the deficit to five at 36-31 with 6:16 to play.
- Drefs buried a pair of three-pointers to help bring Clark within four, but the Blue were able to push their lead to double-digits despite free throws made junior Ashley Leighton and Coleman as Wellesley led 54-43 entering the fourth.
- Clark opened the fourth quarter with seven unanswered points as Coleman scored five and Schatzabel made a layup to cut the deficit to four before Schatzabel and Drefs added four more points to make it a one possession game at 57-54 with 6:54 remaining.
- Coleman and Tarsa each made free throws for Clark's next three points and a Drefs free throw kept the Cougars within striking distance at 64-58, but the Blue ended the game on an 8-2 run as they came away with a 72-60 victory.
