Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (8-8, 0-2 NEWMAC) competed in their first road conference contest of the year and held a lead at the half against MIT (6-10, 2-0 NEWMAC), but fell 70-62 to the Engineers on Wednesday evening from the Rockwell Cage.

How it Happened
  • The scarlet and white jumped out to an early 9-5 lead sparked by four points from graduate student Alaina Schatzabel, a sophomore Kailey Rios triple, and a made layup from sophomore Olivia Shipley.
  • Rios connected on her second three-pointer of the quarter and a layup from sophomore Catherine Antwi helped give the Cougars a 16-10 lead after the first.
  • Sophomore Emma Drefs and Shipley opened the second quarter with four unanswered points to push the lead to double-digits and a 6-0 run in the middle of the period extended the lead to as many as 13 at 26-13 with 6:40 to go.
  • MIT netted six straight before Antwi scored six of Clark's final seven points of the half, with sophomore Cyriah Coleman making a free throw as the Cougars took a 33-27 lead into the break.
  • Coleman scored the first two points of the third quarter and a made free throw in the middle of the period from Schatzabel gave the scarlet and white a 37-33 advantage.
  • MIT rattled off five unanswered and before the end of the quarter, Schatzabel netted Clark's next four points as the Engineers held a 42-41 edge entering the fourth.
  • Antwi hit a three-pointer to give the Cougars a lead and another Schatzabel layup helped tie the contest at 46-46 with 7:50 remaining.
  • MIT then went on a 7-1 run before a three-pointer from Drefs cut the deficit to three halfway through the fourth, but the Engineers scored 10 of the next 12 points with the Clark bucket coming from Drefs as the Cougars trailed 63-52.
  • Coleman hit a pair of three-pointers to cut the deficit to five at 63-58 with 1:33 remaining and after Antwi and Coleman each netted two points Clark trailed 66-62 before MIT hit four free throws down the stretch to with 70-62.  
Inside the Box Score
  • Clark grabbed 40 rebounds, dished out 14 assists, and forced 16 turnovers.
  • Schatzabel and Antwi led the team with 13 points apiece.
  • Coleman nearly recorded a double-double with 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
  • Shipley also reached double-figures with 10 points and pulled down seven boards.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will return to the court on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Mount Holyoke to the Kneller for a contest beginning at 2:00 p.m. At halftime of the contest, Clark Athletics will be honoring members of the 1,000 career point club by displaying a banner in the gymnasium.
