Women's Basketball Honors 1,000 Point Scorers at Halftime, Tops Mount Holyoke 91-40

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (9-8, 1-2 NEWMAC) recorded their first conference victory of the season with a convincing 91-40 victory over Mount Holyoke (4-13, 0-3 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon from the Kneller Gymnasium.

At halftime, Clark Athletics honored 23 women who have reached 1,000 career points with a banner displayed in the gym.

How it Happened
  • The scarlet and white jumped out to an early 9-0 lead sparked by four points from sophomore Olivia Shipley, a made three-pointer from sophomore Kailey Rios, and a layup from sophomore Emma Drefs.
  • After a pair of made free throws from Sofia Francisco, Clark scored 14 unanswered points as sophomore Catherine Antwi and Rios each hit triples while Drefs, graduate student Alaina Schatzabel, and first-year Juliette Tarsa scored to help the Cougars take a 25-7 advantage into the second quarter.
  • The Cougars opened the second quarter on a 9-3 run as Schatzabel scored four points, sophomore Bella Galatt hit a triple, and Drefs made a layup.
  • Schatzabel, Rios, and Antwi combined for Clark's next nine points before senior Megan Swedberg and first-year Juliette Tarsa each scored before the half as the Cougars took a 47-19 lead into the break.
  • The Cougars scored 15 unanswered points to open the third quarter sparked by eight points from first-year Cyriah Coleman and buckets from Shipley, Schatzabel, and Rios helped Clark extend their advantage to 62-19 with 4:51 left in the third.
  • Antwi and Bordonaro each added three points before the end of the quarter and a pair of free throws from Tarsa gave the Cougars a 70-25 lead entering the fourth.
  • Bordonaro, Antwi and Galatt scored the team's first nine points of the fourth and four points from junior Ashley Leighton in the middle of the quarter made it an 83-32 game.
  • Leighton and Swedberg combined to score the final eight points of the contest for the scarlet and white as they came away with a 91-40 victory.

  • Clark grabbed 47 rebounds, dished out 21 assists, made 22 free throws, and forced 40 turnovers.
  • Rios, Schatzabel, and Antwi all led the team with 13 points apiece.
  • Leighton also reached double-figures with a career-high 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
  • All 11 Cougars that played scored in the contest.

Clark will return to the court on Wednesday when they travel to Wheaton for a conference contest beginning at 6:00 p.m.
