NORTON, Mass. - The Clark University women's basketball team (9-9, 1-3 NEWMAC) traveled to Wheaton (6-12, 2-2 NEWMAC) for a conference contest and suffered a 61-52 defeat on Wednesday night from the Emerson Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- Clark jumped out to an early 11-4 lead sparked by four points from first-year Cyriah Coleman, three from graduate student Alaina Schatzabel and two from both sophomores Kailey Rios and Olivia Shipley.
- Wheaton answered with four unanswered before sophomore Catherine Antwi scored four points of her own, but the Lyons rattled off five straight to end the quarter as Clark led 15-13.
- Wheaton took a two point lead before sophomore Emma Drefs hit a pair of free throws and Coleman netted five straight in the middle of the quarter as Clark held a 22-21 edge.
- Coleman added four more points and a pair of free throws from Schatzabel gave the scarlet and white a 28-27 lead entering the half.
- Drefs and Schatzabel combined for the first four points of the third, but Wheaton opened the period on a 13-4 run before Antwi hit a layup to cut the deficit to 40-34.
- Shipley netted Clark's final bucket of the third as the Lyons ended the game quarter on an 8-2 run as they led 48-36 entering the fourth.
- Schatzabel and Rios combined for the first five points of the fourth to cut the deficit to seven and in the middle of the period Rios made a layup as Clark trailed 50-45 with 3:39 remaining.
- The Lyons responded with three unanswered before Antwi rattled off seven straight to make it a one possession game at 53-52 with 1:19 to play.Â
- Wheaton held the Cougars scoreless the remainder of the contest and scored eight consecutive points to end the game as Clark fell 61-52.
